  1. In XP you can enable safely remove by going to my computer> properties > hardware> device manager, select the drive > properties > policies and put a dot in the button "optimize for performance"

  7. how to take ownership of a file or a folder to which you are denied access To get to the security tab in XP home start in safe mode and as administrator
  8. I think if you have a plug n play o/s me, xp & vista (not sure whether w98 was truly p'n'p) then the OS configured the hardware. Some of the earlier linux weren't p'n'p so the BIos had to configure the hardware. I don't believe there is a problem if you allow the bios to configure the hardware.
  9. Using a live linux disk, such as puppy linux you may be able to try a couple of things. 1 Using Gparted, temporarily hide the C drive and set your D drive as active, then delete the c and resize the d drive to use that space. 2 Not using vista myself , you may be able to edit the BCD information in \Boot\Bcd to point to your D partition by using a text editor. there are also other things to try if you have access to tools such as drive image or Acronis, in that you could probably clone your D to C
  10. see how to take ownership of files and folders
  11. Two possibilities other than the above, she's been sleepwalking and dreaming, or, some people are extracting the urine when they ask her. As a politician she's unable to believe that people will do so.
  12. add / remove entries looks to have it covered
  13. to ensure help and support service runs go to start > run > type in services.msc hit ok then scroll down to Help and Support, double click on it to open the properties and ensure it is set to automatically start
  14. 128mb pc133 sdram and 64mb pc100 sdram suitable for older mobos and/or rebuilding older boxes
  15. Have you: Powered everything off at the mains ? reboot all in order, Modem, router then PC. The modem has to be fully powered off from the mains before it will release the mac address of the PC, then on reboot it will pick up the mac address of the router.
  16. back in the day when I used AOL the browser was piggy backed onto IE I believe. Favourite transfer was accomplished by File > export >as HTML, IE can still sucessfully import favourites from an HTML file. The address book may be able to File >Export >as a csv file, OE should then be able to import it, but it may be possibel to set OE to import automatically from his AOL account, depends on whether AOL is web based (like hotmail) or on the local pc. Again similar for the personal filing cabinets, Curlywhirly I believe had AOL until fairly recently.

    Chrome

Agree with tankus, it's quick and looks clean, however I'll have to find the instructions for editing the bookmarks bar, it automatically imported my IE favourites history etc so far I like it and it includes a spillchucker.

    Did you know..

I did, but then I see the back of the certificates 6/7 times daily when printing MOT certificates as an MOT tester :D for you Irene, for actually reading the back, there is also information on what to do if you think the vehicle shouldn't have passed it's MOT when it was tested.
  19. The winrar free edition was a one off with version 3.51, which I can no longer find online, however IZarc and 7-zip are both freeware alternatives
  20. http://www.broadbandchecker.co.uk/ will show your options
  21. Irene, Looks very swish. when I get behind the wheel of the one I have to drive occasionally, somehow flooring the throttle doesn't seem required to get that oomph in style :D
  22. It is possible that these sites have been placed there by some of your security software for your protection tinkering in there may not be advisable and place your pc at risk from hijackers, drive by malware downloads etc. I'm 99.9% certain my pc is clean but I have the following plus many more
  23. I've seen other references to safe mode hanging when agp440.sys appears, the consensus was not that agp440.sys was hanging but rather that the driver/file after was the problem mup.sys found a link also suggestions there could be a ram or usb hardware issue too. If you have access to another pc puppy linux will read /write to ntfs partitions, so you can access your data and even write to cd perhaps safe mode with command prompt will work from here it does mention mup.sys as a possible culprit again It's probably registry mechanic has done the damage unfortunately
