  1. Hi guise, new here to this particular forum. I've been digging on google for some time and haven't been able to come up with a way (within my own capabilities) to do what I want. I want to have a timeout for my open windows. Say I get up from the computer for a few hours, I want all my windows open to minimize as with the show desktop button. I am not very partial to the screensavers windows comes with and one you find on the internet tend to use alot of cpu time. I know I could just have it go black or just turn off my monitor but often times I leave my computer after having done something requiring that I have a lot of windows open. In some cases I may have sensitive items open that I wouldn't want others to see or games running. If anyone has a clue as to how I could possibly approach this I would really appreciate the help. I'm not a programmer so that option is out unless you write it for me. If it is not currently possible then don't worry about it as I am well aware of other work arounds like just having the computer lock. I know that you can minimize with a keystroke so I was thinking that maybe some program might exist to hit keystrokes under certain circumstances like inactivity but I have no idea how to go about searching for such a thing...if there is. Thanks in advance.
  2. Hello. So my computer had a default program (I don't know which program) to open zip. files. The Zip folders appeared normally (the icon with a folder with a ziper) and when I clicked them with the right button they gave me the option to "extract files". I had instaled one program (Express Zip) I don't remember why, and when I did it gave another option when doing that, besides "extract files" it had another option to open the folders with that program. However, today I mistakenly choose the option to open with Express Zip and it said it had to install some components. So I did, and it changed the appearance of the folders and when realized what I had done, I uninstaled it. Thats when the problem begun. I checked the folders again and they didn't have any icon, just a blank thing (like when you don't have any program to open RAR and it doesn't recognize the type of file). When I clicked it, no options where there. They were all gone, both "extract files" and "extract with expres zip". My computer didn't recognize it, and just had the option to chose the program to open the file, but all it shows is chrome and internet ex.. I reinstalled the program and it didn't work, so I tried to install winzip but it still didn't work. I tried to turn off and on my computer but it was the same. Can anyone help me please? I don't know what happened, I just uninstalled Express Zip and this happened. Thanks, Tiago.
  3. Hello, i don't know if this is the right topic section or not :) but i gotta ask it. I wanted to do somthing and this popped up I don't know the pass/id does som1 knows where i can find it? Thx :)
  4. I have a custom built machine, and beyond building it, I'm not very handy with technical support. Every morning when I wake up and use my computer, I find that it's off. When I turn it on, it says the usual "Windows was not shut down properlly" or whatever that message is. I'll paste the report down below. There are 2 problem files, but searching them in explorer does me no good, nor does Google searching them. Also, it seems like the computer crashes only when it hasen't been used for a while (probably around 5 hours) as it crashes when I don't use it during the day for a while. Any ideas? Thanks. ------------------------------------------------------------ Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3 Locale ID: 1033 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 9f BCP1: 0000000000000003 BCP2: FFFFFA800C97AA10 BCP3: FFFFF80000B9C3D8 BCP4: FFFFFA801B1DE010 OS Version: 6_1_7601 Service Pack: 1_0 Product: 768_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\102912- 13728-01.dmp C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-20716-0.sysdata.xml Read our privacy statement online: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=104288&clcid=0x0409 If the online privacy statement is not available, please read our privacy statement offline: C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt
  5. It seems to me that Windows isn't built for todays PC market and stinks right now but will be better later. They say it here. What do you guys think? I mean it seems like it's built for a market of all touch screens.
  6. hi we're using windows 7 hp. i was wondering if the policy for users can be set, i had thought this was only a professional or other edition feature. i audited our network and we got a 1.25 out of 10 security rating (belarc). i've done much to try and improve the security, but i can only seem to get a decent reading from like secunia software patcher. i have a lot of security related questions, including on software topics of like wireshark, secunia, or nessus, or gfi. but i don't want to just spiel. so for starters, what can i do about user policy not having a professional edition of windows.

  8. Hey, just recently I've started getting BSOD's, even though no changes have been made to my system. This is really puzzling me, as I am able to determine what is causing it, but I have absolutely no idea how to fix it. The STOP error is 0x000000D1 (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL), and the blue screen points to WmXLCore.sys as the culprit. Through my own investigations, I found that WmXLCore.sys is a Logitech driver for Logitech gamepad controllers. The BSOD triggers whenever I am playing a game using my gamepad, and it will happen randomly at any time during the game. When I discovered this, I thought it would be a pretty simple fix, but it appears that I was wrong. I've tried re-installing the drivers multiple times already, and nothing has changed. I feel that it is important for me to stress that this has never happened to me in the past. I've been using these Logitech gamepads for almost two years now, and I've had no problems in the past. The BSODs started up completely at random. I've been trying to find information on how to fix this for two days now, but I've given up trying to fix this myself as I can't find any reliable solutions. I've uploaded a bit of the minidump here: http://pastebin.com/jDFzeAtN The full minidump is available here: http://www.mediafire.com/?9uwtboe5lcpbpeh Links to the two gamepads that I use are here: http://www.logitech.com/en-hk/support/game-gear/7361 http://www.logitech.com/en-hk/support/game-gear/7359 I can upload any additional info if required. Any help whatsoever would be very appreciated!
  9. thanks for the help in advance. I am having a very interesting issue with my work computer which is running Windows 7. When I plug in an ntfs drive it crashes explorer. If I close explorer in the task manager and run new task explorer.exe it shows up in task manager but does not pop up on screen. If I try and shutdown after plugging in the drive, it just hangs on shutting down. FAT32 drives work fine, but some of the files I work with are over 4 gigs so I need my ntfs drive to work. I have tried several different ntfs drives and they all do the same thing. When I plug them in other computers they work fine. All FAT32 drives work. Almost every link on google is purple for the searches "ntfs drive freezes explorer", or "external harddrive is not recognized by windows 7" and dozens of other searches. I have tried to look at it through disk management, but the second I plug in the drive it crashes and will never load again. One thing it does do, is in my computer Local Disk E:/ pops up and tries to load. But it never loads, the drive I am using is a toshiba, but I have used WD and other drives and they all do the same thing. I have hit a dead end and I have no idea what to do. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!
  10. I keep getting failure messages such as the ones below (unfortunately there's plenty more) due to Windows Update failures. I would love any help as to figuring out some of them! As a side note, I noticed an issue with MSN, but can't pinpoint what exactly the issue was. I apologize in advance for any and all vagueness. 12. Hello! You have definetely seen topics like this and you will see more if you write it in google. But I can honestly say that I've read almost every post in web that is similar to this problem. Recently I bought a new laptop which had Linux OS. I had a Windows 7 installation CD at home so I decided to try Linux, but if I'm not satisfied, install Windows 7. Unfortunately Linux (to be more accutare - Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11) is not the OS for me, and I began to search through web different ways how to uninstall Linux, and it's a nightmare. Someone gives an advice but in the next site it appears to damage the computer, motherboard, and can crash everything possible. I have seen words liek "MBR", "hard drive partitions" and other ghosts (I'm new at computer stuff so it all looks to me like chinese language) that gives me an advice to use command prompt in Linux (to be honest, everything I tried to do with this thing just made it harder and harder). Codes, codes and codes, but no answer I could understand. Then I found a post which said to insert the Windows 7 installation CD, boot the computer and choose to boot it from DVD. I stopped to do anything at the step when Windows gave me a choice to install the OS at on of 6 partitions, not one of them allowed to install something related to Windows (nfts) files. And the next moment is this - when I'm asking to help, because I'm more than desperate right now. Already saying THANK YOU to every answer this post will get!
  13. Hey there.... I have been notice that windows now are not releasing any version like windows xp right?.. Yeah, sure it does. 14. I had an unofficial Ms-Dos boot disk (FreeDos) and I was trying to dual boot it with Windows XP. I had made the partition with EaseUS and allocated 20gb. When I booted from the disk on startup, I followed the instructions, then turned my computer off. When I turned it back on there was nothing but a white error message in the3 top-left corner saying, "Error missing or corrupt operating system". So I deleted the the Ms-Dos partition, then used an official Windows XP Service Pack 2 disk and made a new partition and booted into that. I can view all my old files from the original partition except for the locked user files. Someone told me that it was because of the file "autoexec.bat" or something. Any help would be much appreciated.
  15. I'm currently running on Ubuntu Linux 11.10. I wanted to switch back to Windows so I ordered an installation disk that arrived today. I wiped out the Ubuntu partition and installed Windows. The installation went well, but when I tried to connect to the Internet, my Ethernet modem was not recognized. I called my Internet provider, Cox Communications, and they walked me through this process: Start --> Control Panel --> Network Connections. They wanted me to find the Local Area Connection (LAN) but it was missing. The representative said that I had incorrectly installed the hardware and thus had to do certain configurations to get it to work. I'm not too good with computer technology, so I'm lost. Anyone know how to fix this problem, or what hardware I need? I went to the device manager and saw the Yellow question marks and etc. So I'm missing something. Yet it won't let me fix it without Internet connection which is what I'm trying to get.... Thanks in advance for your assistance!

  18. Hey everybody ! :) This is my first post so bear with me, Today i was visiting my elderly aunt when all of a sudden the phone rang with a long distance call. She picked up the phone and just by her responses i could tell that it was a fraudulent microsoft scam so her being not so technology savvy called me over to the phone. She told the telemarceter and he happily complied but as soon as he said "Hi my name is Mike and i am calling from microsoft windows" I quickly replied back in a louder more aggressive tone and said "This is a scam !" and then he proceeded to tell me how i didn't know it was a scam , not knowing that i had read about this before. He then started to get nervous and try to convince me. As soon as he started talking his lies i told him that i didn't own any computers and this is a scam so it could not be me, He then quickly said bye bye and hung up on me. What are your experiences with this ? Has this ever happened to you ?
  19. Hey! My Windows Media Player (11) decided to be difficult. It worked fine for a while - and it still plays music - but the library stays empty. It won't add any songs, or anything. I didn't find a way to delete this Media Player and apparently, it isn't possible to install a new one. So, what to do?

  21. I have a rather strange situation on my hands. You see, here at my new workplace, we have a certain industrial machine which requires several programs and drivers which, in turn, only run on Windows 95. In addition, the installation CDs for said programs and drivers have evidently been missing for the last ten years. Up until now, we have been using a Compaq Prolinea 4/66 which is probably older than I am, but it's on its last legs and so it has fallen to the resident assistant IT tech (me) to come up with a solution that doesn't cost the company any money. Now, I happen to have an old HP dc7600 lying around with Windows XP SP3 Pro. At first, it was my plan to run a virtual machine (via VMware) with the Win95 image. Unfortunately, VMware requires more than 1GB of RAM which is all I have on hand. If worse comes to worst, I'll pay out of my own pocket for more memory, but I'd rather avoid that unless it's absolutely necessary. My next best bet seems to be to try and create a bootable USB flash drive with the existing Win95 installation on it. I have found various tutorials for running a bootable DOS prompt which can then be used to initialize a fresh version of Win95, but I can't seem to locate a way by which an existing installation could be utilized. Any suggestions, either for a flash drive trick or some other method? It doesn't need to be fast, and it doesn't need to be pretty, it just needs to work. I am unsure what system specs one would need to know for this particular issue, but the dc7600 I'm working with has Windows XP SP3 Professional v.2002, 1 GB of memory, an 80 GB HDD, and an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz. If you need any further information, do not hesitate to ask. Many thanks.

  23. Hey all, So, my computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. It's got a sticker on it with the license number. However, the manufacturer (Gateway) did not provide me with an installation disc. Sadly, my computer has recently become infected with malware. I want to do the safe thing and perform a complete re-partition, re-format, and re-install. How can I get an installation disc for Windows 7?
  24. Hello! So, i'm having a laboration in my Computer Basics class right now and I have some MAJOR problems with the permissions for this. I could use some help ASAP! I have already failed once with this and I'm having a go at it tomorrow again, so any help would be appreciated. So this is what I have to do: "All files created in this directory should only be accessible by the user who created the file, and no one else. A user who creates a file must get full permissions for that file, but no other users should be able to even read it. For directories, only the user who created it should have access to it. All other users should be denied to even list the contents of that directory. Hint: Use the Creator/Owner placeholder" There is also another problem with this one. Because I have given a certain group (all personnel) FULL CONTROL over the whole directory, but the users (except for one) can't see the directory at all. I have now removed the directory and created it again in an attempt to start from the beginning. Any help would be neccessary and I'd appreciate any answers at all. Thank you for your time! Kind regards Karl Edenstål
  25. I have a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows XP desktop. The desktop is wired to the router and printer. The laptop is wirelessly connected to the router. I want to be able to print via the Network thing but its asking me for passwords and I don't know what to put. I've emailed Sky, my broadband provider, but that barely helped at all. You people are my last hope! Here's a diagram:
