  1. Hi, I've installed Windows XP Profesional SP2 for my brother's PC (Core 2 CPU, ASUS motherboard) few years ago. Last week, my brother told me his PC did not function after boot up. I took his PC for checking and found that the mouse couldn't move from power on till XP boot-up "completed". The problem persisted no matter I booted the PC in normal or safe mode. I tried connect functioning PS/2 mouse to the PS/2 mouse port and USB mouse to all available USB ports (4 available) but still couldn't make the mouse to move at all. The PS/2 keyboard seemed function normal. I checked the BIOS settings, the legacy USB control is set "auto". Could anyone suggest ways to solve this problem? Do I need to re-install XP to fix the problem? If re-installation is unavoidable, what's the most convenient way to copy the Microsoft outlook message out of the HD? Tks!
  2. My 5-6+ years old Dell Inspirion won’t boot. Sometimes it just starts the fans and beeps a couple of times before it dies. In the past it has always worked to pull out the power cord and let the machine stand unplugged for a while. One time that trick didn’t work. I unplugged it, reseated the ram and used an air blower to clean out the dust. After that the machine worked again. It has been working for two months now. This morning it didn’t work. So in addition to reseating the ram and air blowing, I also reseated the video card and changed the battery on the motherboard. I had to change some bios settings and go trough a disk check, but everything is working again. Yey! But for how long? Any tips about this? How can I get my computer to last for longer than two months at a time? Thanks in advance. On247

  4. Trying to get online on my PC after work, no program that required internet connectivity, IE, Chrome, different video games, would work. Check modem and router, rebooted bout a couple times, checked cabling, cables are good. The PC seems to see the network cable when it's hooked up, however I'm still unable to connect to anything requiring the internet. WiFi works, same ethernet cable thats in the PC i removed and plugged into my laptop, with wireless turned off, and can surf fine so it's not a cabling splice or split issue. Device manager states theres no malfunctions with the NIC, have made no changes to firewall settings. Not real sure what else to do. Just get home, yesterday no issues, today can't get online. Running out of ideas to troubleshoot. Any help would be most appreciated. Modem & Router connectivity: Windows XP: TWC provider: No upgrades to software or hardware recently. Was working fine yesterday, today not so much.
  5. I've noticed from time-to-time that we still get a little flurry of questions relating to Windows XP. I checked back into the "Essential Guides" archives the other day for something that at the time, (Written / Posted 2004) I considered a good guide posted by "Scarecrow Man" Here is the link: http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=15213&hl=+my++computer++just++crashed.++i++cant++load++windows What I am seeing on my monitor is saying that something hasn't quite stood the test of time very well for some reason ? Luckily back about 2010 I copied the post as a PDF. That PDF is still intact and remains on a friends computer. It contains clickable links as in the original post which allows you to still visit an original article by Microsoft on corrupted Registry in XP, and also an article on the Recovery Console. Should anyone on the forum wish to download this 2004 post as a PDF, you can find it HERE It may just get you out of trouble if you are still running the beloved old XP, and you cant get the blighter to boot.
  6. Thrown out old keyboard & mouse & replaced. Both are USB. XP fails to detect them at logon. I can use the keyboard in BIOS & have checked BIOS to make sure that USB is not disabled. So, I can't logon in either normal or safe mode. There are no PS2 sockets. The USB ports are working because I can plug in a Flash Drive and see it in BIOS boot options. I have tried mouse & keyboard in all six USB sockets, restarted, waited for several minutes but still they are not detected. I have now run out of ideas. Can anyone out there help at all?
  7. I had an unofficial Ms-Dos boot disk (FreeDos) and I was trying to dual boot it with Windows XP. I had made the partition with EaseUS and allocated 20gb. When I booted from the disk on startup, I followed the instructions, then turned my computer off. When I turned it back on there was nothing but a white error message in the3 top-left corner saying, "Error missing or corrupt operating system". So I deleted the the Ms-Dos partition, then used an official Windows XP Service Pack 2 disk and made a new partition and booted into that. I can view all my old files from the original partition except for the locked user files. Someone told me that it was because of the file "autoexec.bat" or something. Any help would be much appreciated.
  8. I'm currently running on Ubuntu Linux 11.10. I wanted to switch back to Windows so I ordered an installation disk that arrived today. I wiped out the Ubuntu partition and installed Windows. The installation went well, but when I tried to connect to the Internet, my Ethernet modem was not recognized. I called my Internet provider, Cox Communications, and they walked me through this process: Start --> Control Panel --> Network Connections. They wanted me to find the Local Area Connection (LAN) but it was missing. The representative said that I had incorrectly installed the hardware and thus had to do certain configurations to get it to work. I'm not too good with computer technology, so I'm lost. Anyone know how to fix this problem, or what hardware I need? I went to the device manager and saw the Yellow question marks and etc. So I'm missing something. Yet it won't let me fix it without Internet connection which is what I'm trying to get.... Thanks in advance for your assistance!
  9. Windows Help says that in order to enable Hibernate I need to open Power Options and select the 'Hibernate' tab. Actually I already knew that, so the question is: What do I have to do to enable the 'Hibernate' tab in the Power Options? I'm pretty sure this quation has been asked before but I can't remember the answer. OS = Windows XP-Pro x64. CPU = G840 RAM = 4 GB Plenty of room on the hard disk.
  10. Hi! I have an Acer Aspire One AOA150 with WinXP sp3. I want to create a bootable usb for new install. I have no optical drive and no XPcd. I have only XP on existing HDD. I have tried many ways, but I always end up with error. I need a very spesific tutorial, because I am far from an expert. Is it possible to do this? Kjetil
  11. I have a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows XP desktop. The desktop is wired to the router and printer. The laptop is wirelessly connected to the router. I want to be able to print via the Network thing but its asking me for passwords and I don't know what to put. I've emailed Sky, my broadband provider, but that barely helped at all. You people are my last hope! Here's a diagram:
