  2. Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 I tried to restore to a previously 'created restore point' but it failed (System restore error 0x80070091). Because I had an Audio Driver issue. Meantime I fixed my audio card driver problem (reinstall)... But immediately two irrelevant things are screwed up now: My dedicated 6TB backup drive won't let anything to be written to or deleted from it for no good reason! It started to show: "The Recycle Bin on Y:\ is corrupted" error "Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this Drive?" I click YES! But of course, the system won't let me due to problem No1. "You need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder." This drive is a 6 TB data drive and has been serving with no issues about a year now. And the drive shows no indication of errors or any weaknesses. S.M.A.R.T. stats are all green. My other system has no such problems with it. What I have tried so far: sfc /scannow: No Problems I did the change the owner to 'Everyone' and included the sub-folders. It scanned the whole drive and seemed like it completed the task without any errors. I activated the built-in admin account. takeown /F Y:\ /R It took, of course, forever to scan the drive. Results of that scan: Mostly: "SUCCESS" (including a bunch of Recycle stuff) Few: "The system cannot find the path specified." And This"You do not have permissions to read the contents of directory blah..." "Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you full control? "YES" Scanned twice as much more: "Success in all entries" Yet nothing has changed! I still don't have any permission for that Drive but reading permission... Why now?! Why after trying (and failing) to Restore the system? The second OS that I am building as a workstation has no such problem. I deactivated U.A.C. in that one. The one with the problem is the one with U.A.C. Any expertise help will be cherished...

I have a windows 8 laptop.
  4. I think I have discovered a serious security bug in Windows 8.1. Today I was using my (non-Admin) user account and with Internet Explorer I saved a file in the default Downloads folder (under This PC). The file was saved, but when I went to that folder, the file was not there! Now, I was about to download it again, using IE, same as before, when I noticed in the Save dialog box that the file had indeed been downloaded, and that it was there, in the Downloads folder under This PC. Frustrated, I went to that very folder, but the file was nowhere to be found. I was really puzzled. Then, by chance, while logged in another account (namely the Admin account), I happened to go to the Downloads folder, and there was the file that I had downloaded using the other account. Obviously, what I described above represents a security problem: firstly because my private files may get saved by mistake into another person's account without me even realizing it, and secondly because I was able to access another person account (i.e. the Admin account) via the IE's Save dialog box, seeing the list of the files there, and possibly even accessing them (I have not tried the latter, though). Has anyone experienced anything like the situation I described? I must also say that I later tried to replicate this abnormal behavior, but for some unknown reason I couldn't.
  5. Hi all, First post! Hope this is in the right category although it may coincide with security. There is one computer (where I work) where it is absolutely essential that the sound remains on at all times. We have found that users sometimes turn this off as it can be a little offputting but it must remain on. Emails from supervisors and verbal notices have not changed the situation. Removing the audio icon from the taskbar changed nothing as the user just goes directly into the Control Panel. My question is, can I disable all audio settings throughout the machine so they always remain on, or is there somewhere in Windows that logs the setting change so we can narrow down the time it happened? I have looked through Event Viewer but nothing jumps out. Also, the user must have local admin rights. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  6. If I add a password to my account, what does this mean in terms of security? I.e. does it mean no one can ever see any of my files, browsing history etc? And is it all encrypted or are folders just hidden? Are there different levels of accounts that hase some bearing on this? If someone were to boot up in safe mode or some othere way, can they by-pass any of this? Also, can I set things up so no one else can use the PC at all? Thanks.
  7. hi we're using windows 7 hp. i was wondering if the policy for users can be set, i had thought this was only a professional or other edition feature. i audited our network and we got a 1.25 out of 10 security rating (belarc). i've done much to try and improve the security, but i can only seem to get a decent reading from like secunia software patcher. i have a lot of security related questions, including on software topics of like wireshark, secunia, or nessus, or gfi. but i don't want to just spiel. so for starters, what can i do about user policy not having a professional edition of windows.
  8. Hi, just joined the forum and am looking for some help on a topic of difficulty. My son likes to game A LOT on the computer so I let him on to play occasionally. However when I put a password on the computer to prevent him from playing, he found a way to make it so that ANY password would work to get in. he had me fooled for a year and has probably been playing all the time while im gone. I dont want him wasting his life away so I need some help removing this 'app' or whatever it is that lets him on. A little background on the program: It will give you access to the computer no matter what you type in (i even tried password for poops and gigs and it still let me in) I cant change the password through the parental controls everytime I try to make a new password, I get 'Windows cannot set the new password' Is there someway to restore the computer to normal security? and is there anyway to permanently remove this program (im convinced its a startup program)? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
  9. why is it internet explorer is one of the least secure internet utilities, but when compared to firefox which is open to the public so has the greater potential for security leaks, but seems more secure than searching the web on internet explorer??
