VPN connection error

Does it routinely connect on every 4th attempt? In other words, is it always connecting every 4th time, or is is sporadic?

What kind of VPN? Is it a Windows PPTP VPN, or a preconfigured client supplied by your work?

Do you have any local firewall software? Do you have a Router/Firewall.

To test your Internet connectivity, run an extended Ping as follows:

Go to Start, Run, and type cmd in the Open box of the Run window that opens. Then click Ok. This will open a Command Window.

In the Command Window, type ping -t www.cisco.com. You should see the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping -t www.cisco.com

Pinging www.cisco.com [198.133.219.25] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 198.133.219.25:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Of course yours should say Reply From... where mine says Request timed out. (I have a PIX Firewall and have not allowed Ping through).

You'll want to get consistent replies. Let it run a while (about 20 or 30 times), and then hit Ctrl-C to stop it. The reply time should be relatively short and quite consistent. If you have a lot of variation there may be a networking problem somewhere.

Sorry about all the questions. If you need help finding out any of the information I've asked for, please post it and I'll help.

Sincerely,

IT connect routinely every 4th attempt. It is a VPN pptp connection. I have several routers and a firewall. I have disabled l2tp, file and print sharing, and client for microsoft networks. It still works every 4th time. It acts like its trying l2tp every time even when its diabled. It pings fine.

to add on to my last post. I believe it has something to do with the NIC card because I have about 10 computers and it only occurs on three. All of which are dell computers the others are a mix from compaq to toshiba then a couple of dell laptops. The dell computers also have 3com NIC cards but one has two NIC on which is integrated and it has the same result.

What are the Operating Systems on the problem computers versus the computers that work?

What's making you think they're trying to connect using L2TP?

There's a free sniffer program called Ethereal is available that might help you. Make sure you download the Windows executable, and the winpcap file. You'll have to install winpcap before installing Ethereal. You can put Ethereal on one of the questionable PC's, run it, and try to start your VPN session. If you're not familiar with the output from a sniffer, it will be a little daunting to look through. Have you ever used one before?

Sincerely,

Are you using preconfigured client software created by the people who own the 2003 Server, or are you setting it up yourself? For a PPTP connection, it can usually be done in Windows manually.

Have you tried an extended ping to rule out network issues yet?

I'm not too sure what you have to allow with the client and Windows 2003 setup you're using, but I know Nortel's Contivity requires me to open ports 50 and 51, and UDP 500 on firewalls to get a connection. If it's a firewall problem, I'd expect it to happen every time though.
