administrator password

Hi, Im new to this site. So, you tell me if my question does not go with the forum topic.

Im an administrator, I have 5 servers which control the sql servers, internet and e mail (mdaemon), I want to change my password, the problem is that when I force it to change it, the internet connection drops on my lan.

sometimes it says that the passwd can not be change right now for that account.

any solution

Arong,

What do you mean your server controls the Internet? Do you mean Internet Information Server (IIS) for you Web Stie? Do you have an Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server?

You'll want to see what services are using the Administrator login to run. To do this, you'll have to go to each Server, right click on my computer and go to Manage, click the plus next to Services and Applications, click on Services, right click each service and go to Properties, Click the Log on tab, and see whether the Service is using the Local System Account or a different account. If it's set to use a different account, make sure you not the account name.

You'll have to reset the password for any service that uses the Administrator account to match the new Administrator password.

It's painstaking, but necessary if you don't already know which services use that account.

post helped me a lot, I have never administrated windows, I administrated

linux before.

I didn´t have to do all this to change the admin passwd,

is there any other way ?

It sounds like you're inheriting a Network Administrator position where someone left recently? To find out what service is stopping your Internet connection, you can look at the services on the Proxy Server. I strongly recommend doing the steps I outlined though. You'll want to know what other services will be affected, and it's information you should gather for future use.

yes, Im inheriting a Network Administrator position where someone left recently, and that´s what bothers me the most.

I tried yesterday to reset the passwd of the service that uses internet (IIS) and I was running into problems, the internet drops for about 20 mn.

I´m planing to install Linux, but now I have to admnistrate this.

how can I see the services that affect the IIS ?

Right click the IIS Service and click Stop (Don't actually stop the service!) A warning window should come up saying which other services are affected by the one you're stopping. Write those down, or do an Alt, Print Screen and paste it to Wordpad.

Just in case you accidentally shut the service down, you might want to do this at lunch or after hours.

Note, this won't work with services that don't need other services to run. If you click on an independent service, and click stop, it will simply stop the service, or may warn you by asking if you really want to stop the service.
