rowdy Posted November 15, 2004 Report Share Posted November 15, 2004 My son has recently installed WXPsp2 on one of his computers and changed the motherboard and Hard Disc on the other which is a games machine with W98se installed ( after changes ).Problem the computers were networked successfully before these changes but he now cannot get a working network. After trying various approaches every time he tries he gets messages like ' computer name already in use' ,' network already exists' .Question what is the easiest way to clear out all the previous network attempts, short of reformatting, to enable a fresh start.rowdy Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
homecomputeraid Posted November 16, 2004 Report Share Posted November 16, 2004 Are you using a Switch or a Router? How are the 2 PC' connected? Do you know how they were getting their IP Addresses? rowdy Posted November 16, 2004 Author Report Share Posted November 16, 2004 Details as requested, Connection is via a Belkin Network kit ie A switch and one Network card in each computer. BT Broadband modem USB ( only connection on modem ) attached to WXP machine. IP Addresses set to Auto, seem to acquire in right range. Computers have different names. homecomputeraid Posted November 17, 2004 Report Share Posted November 17, 2004 In a Windows Active Directory network (one with a 2000 or 2003 Domain Controller), when a Server goes offline unexpectedly and is rebuilt, there can be corrupt Meta-data that causes symptoms similar to what you're experiencing. I have no idea yet what could be causing it in a home network with XP and 98 though.You sound like you have a bit of network savvy. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling the TCP/IP Protocol and Microsoft Clients on both machines. If you need help on how to do that, please post. You'll also want to turn off file and printer sharing on both PC's, although I think the PC's will do that for you if TCP/IP is your only network protocol.Can you please tell me the computer names, workgroups, IP Addresses and Subnet Masks of both computers, Gateway IP, and DNS Servers? All that information is available in the ipconfig /all. You could just cut and paste the output to this post.
