I installed a new motherboard (2.6GHz/512MBRAM) with usual built in Intel widgets (diplay,LAN etc) but kept my HDU and W98SE o/s. The m/b installation tools only work with W2000 or XP, however I have managed to get a stable system in this new environment, BUT ... my display only works in 16 colour mode.

I cannot change resolution using the usual control panel/display method. When the system is shut down I get a few seconds of Windows shut down in glorious 256 colour - so something works.

Can anyone tell me the shutdown sequence for W98SE and ideally suggest which components to try closing down to enable the 'display driver' to work properly without re-installing the o/s (too many applications) ?

It might be a mapping problem but I have this feeling it is relatively easy to remedy once the cause is understood.

PS I have looked for Intel drivers downloads but now believe this is not whats needed (couldn't find anything obvious).

Have you loaded the latest Display drivers for your graphics card.

Go to device manager click on display and see if the graphics card is loaded if it is showing click on update driver then next if the drivers are on the computer it will load,the fact that you are showing 256 colours tends to say there not.

You will of course need the driver disk if the computer can't find the driver.

Re-installing Win9x was actually quite easy; it would just re-install over the existing Windows, leaving installed applications intact. I have done it dozens of times at that time.

But, as the two previous posters suggested, try first to download and install the latest driver for your display adapter.
