n1ghts Posted February 20, 2005 Report Share Posted February 20, 2005 Hi I am trying to connect Internet using adhoc network for Internet connection sharing (ICS). I have trid to make the PC A which is connected to Internet and it has wireless card which I want to use to connect to PC B which has wireless card as well. So I tried to make the Internet connection to be shared, but when I tried to make the ad hoc network using wizard by choosing the second option assigning network manually instead of using flash drive, there is an error message appear said " Depending wireless network software confirgured in this computer, wireless network connection wizard might not work" and when I want to try to do it manually by clicking wireless connection properties, I cannot find the"wireless network" tab which is the second tab if you click the properties after "general" tab and before "advanced" tab.anyone knows why this is happening?Thanks Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

n1ghts Posted February 20, 2005 Author Report Share Posted February 20, 2005 HiI managed to get private address assigned for the PC b from PC a and in PC b I can see the ip address wireless network card for PC a as the default gateway for PC b. You do not need a router. ad hoc networking is relatively simple and can be made overcomplicated. As long as we remember that wifi will do the same as a wired network we can keep our feet on the floor. If you had two machines with network cards you could [and most people did in the old days] run a crossover cable between them and you're in business. Routers now are cheap so everyone uses them - you don't have to, they make life easier because you don't have to have both machines on at the same time but you do not need a router if you are are running a two computer network.I have added a Word doc for you to have a look at.AdHocICS.doc Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

n1ghts Posted February 20, 2005 Author Report Share Posted February 20, 2005 well PC b got the ip address from PC a i.e. 192.168.0.2 and PC a is 192.168.0.1. Both of them have class C subnet mask and the default gateway for PC b is the ipaddress for PC a i.e. 192.168.0.1....I tried to ping from a to b and it works....but I cant ping from b to a and it says request time out.... I may be able to help.If you want to add a router to the mix, I suggest the following:Internet Have both PC's get their IP's via DHCP from the Router, and have them both plugged into Switch Ports on the Router (or in this case, have one plugged into a switch port and one attaching via wireless). I would personally disable or remove the wireless NIC from PC A so you only have one NIC installed if you choose to add a Router (or remove or disable the wired NIC and use wireless on both PC's). n1ghts Posted February 23, 2005 Author Report Share Posted February 23, 2005 the problem is that PC B is not available anymore, I was trying to have internet connection sharing with my friend who stayed with me for a few days....now I only have another PC B with only ethernet NIC and for the topology homecomputeraid recommends cannot be applied since the mac address has been registered from uni accomodation and if I were to change the MAC address registration, the IT admin in uni will know that I am going to have wireless router installed for ICS...so my solution towards this matter is to have the topology I said earlier....will that be possible?thx again Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

homecomputeraid Posted February 23, 2005 Report Share Posted February 23, 2005 The easiest solution (and of course the most expensive) is to get a device like a Cisco VPN Concentrator, or a Nortel Contivity. These devices are set up to permit you to easily select encryption levels, and Cisco and Nortel make their own client software used to connect to their boxes.If you want a free solution, you can try OpenVPN: http://sourceforge.net/projects/openvpn/.
