UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Recommended Posts

So I place my laptop in my car, everything seems to be working fine. A few hours after driving, I boot it up and it starts loading windows (windows icon with that scrolling thing at the bottom). Suddenly, all I see is a blue screen with text on it that says:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Also, there is:

****STOP: 0x000000ED (0x8733B900, 0xC00000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

The rest of the screen just says to try to reboot or change BIOS options.

Does anyone know what is wrong and what I should do?

The error is indicative of a hard drive failure. One quick test I often try is booting to a Windows 98 SE OEM Boot Disk and boot to it. Run a program called fdisk at the command prompt and see whether fdisk recognizes your hard drive. If not, check in BIOS to see if BIOS recognizes your hard drive. If not, I would strongly suspect a bad hard drive, although it could be the controller (mother board), cable, or drive.

I've used a program called SpinRite to recover hard drives, but I don't know how it will work if you can't even see the drive. Depending on the data you might lose, it could be worth a try.
