evlich Posted March 5, 2005 Report Share Posted March 5, 2005 Hello, I've gotten really really annoyed with explorer lately. I have a few folders on my hard drives that take explorer several minutes to load and the entire time my processor is running at 100% cpu. I could imagine this if the folders were really big (maybe), but they aren't they are actually really pretty small (about 30 items, 500M total). I am noticing the same thing with the search feature, it takes forever and chews up the cpu cycles. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? evlich Posted March 8, 2005 Author Report Share Posted March 8, 2005 Hmm, that's interesting. Does windows look inside the zip files and cache the contents? That seems really weird. The folders that I tend to experience this on are folders that contain large zip files so that is probably the problem. I have defragged my hard disk (several times actually, I thought that that was the problem, but it didn't fix anything). Does anyone know a way to prevent Windows from looking into zip files (my guess of what it is doing that makes it slow). For other people that find this annoying there is a 2xExplorer (and on the site a link to a newer, but partially commercial version) that doesn't seem to have this problem. When you double-click on a folder that contains large ZIP files, do these ZIP files appear in the Explorer's (left) Folders pane?If this is the case, clicking on the [+] on the left of the folder name (to expand the sub-folder list) before clicking on the folder name itself will circumvent the problem with the long opening time.To "fix" the problem, see this thread: http://www.windowsforum.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=16871 - it fixed the problem for me for a while, but after a day or two it always comes back. So far I haven't found a way to get it permanently fixed.I also haven't found yet what makes that behavior come back - it could be use of WinZip. Do you have WinZip installed? What version?
