k3nn
this is the network topology for the shop having DSL inet take a look:www.photos.ph/image/169920/largenote: 1 NIC in server becoz the DSL modem is connected to the uplink of the hub/switch. All LAN stations and home PC are using XP & the server is also XP and is using ICS (inet connection sharing). the workgroups of all PCs are the same. server acts as the gateway and DNS(both 198.162.0.1) the dsl modem has another set DNS and gateway for itself. LAN stations are using static ip and using server to have inet access. home pc has the same settings as LAN stations.the problem is when i use the home pc and dial in to the shop, i can't access inet. i can only see the server and its shares (by PINGing 198.162.0.1 or using \\198.162.0.1) all the stations aren't accesible. inet isn't accessible as well :(. the LAN stations all have inet and shares working properly.has anyone a solution how I connect remotely to the shop server and use its inet? my idea was to let the server *think* i was one of its LAN station but it doesn't work...pls help. homecomputeraid
That's a pretty sophisticated little setup you have there. I'm interested in how you get an XP machine to act as a DNS Server? Must be an ICS thing. If I understand your topology right, dial-up users are connecting to a modem attached to the XP machine? Once they connect, are they in a terminal session (Remote Desktop session) on the XP machine?XP isn't really designed to be a server OS, so it lacks a lot of the features you'd find on a 2000 or 2003 server. Any chance the organization can go in for a server?
k3nn
thx, i don't really know how it was set up. the DSL company set it up for us. it's a small gaming shop of my brother where i would like to connect to his dsl and be able to surf. i don't mind that my connection would be reduced to 33.6 kbps, what i'm after is possibility of unlimited dial-up (if you will). shop is using simple ICS from XP, it works on the lan. i can set up a server win 2k...but it looks very complicated on my end. i don't know how to set it up for my self without calling the dsl company. what would i need to make it possible dialing in to the shop and give me access to inet?i've heard about NAT programs, and all sorts of proxies, but i don't really know if i would be looking at hardware solutions: router and all that. sir, have you tried dialing up to a server with dsl and able to browse inet from that? what are the points i should be mindful of to enable dial in and share inet?ok, if i do have a server, how do i go about configuring the LAN stations and RRAS? or RAS? PPPoE? which should come first? last? thx for the trouble though :)
k3nn
there's no desktop session as i didn't configure remote desktop function. didn't really need it. when i connect to the XP, i can ping the server 198.162.0.1 and use explorer "\\198.162.0.1" and i can see the shares by then.what i'm after is be able to browse inet when i'm connected to the XP. is this even possible? homecomputeraid
When you say your remote computer 'connects' to the XP machine, what do you mean by connects? The modem picks up and gets you to the XP "server", then what? XP just isn't designed to take modem traffic and pass it to the Internet. I don't know of a way to make that happen. Maybe someone else does, if so, please share. If you want to use Windows 2000 Server, you would have to set up Routing and Remote Access. It isn't easy to set up. I'd do my best to help, but if you can get unlimited access for $9.95 a month, I'm not sure it's worth it.
k3nn
ugh! this hurts: "XP just isn't designed..." :(9.95 bucks? that's dsl? here it's around $45 a month unlimited dsl...anyway thx for the help...i found this nat32 program and thinking on giving it a try. it says, it can route xp dsl inet shares to ALL types of network including remote clients!can u take a look at the specs and see if i might be mistaken? i don't really know if i'm reading them correctly. i do hope so :) www.nat32.com
homecomputeraid
The $9.95 is for dial-up, not DSL. DSL or Cable will be more. If you're dialing into the XP machine, you'll only get dial-up speed. That's why I was talking about dial-up pricing. You should get much greater bandwidth from DSL or Cable.I'll look over that program as soon as I get a chance.
