sub rosa Posted July 18, 2005 Report Share Posted July 18, 2005 Hi,I am trying to reformat an old computer that is going to be used for basic word/excel practise and as a static internet transmitter for the rest of the house. It is a 2GB 64RAM computer.I've have tried to reformat the computer, I've used the Start Up floppy disk and have gone through the procedure to wipe the C drive. Next step is running the Windows 98 setup (this is Windows 98 upgrade so I have the Windows 95 disk ready for upgrade validation). It runs through the first part and once complete rather than continuing a beep noise occurs and a black box with nothing written inside appears. From here on in nothing happens. This picture shows the screen:Does anyone have any advice how I can continue? I've done the procedure 5 times now and the same thing happens every time.Thanks,Matt. Question(s):Has this particular computer ever run with Win98? Could it be that it has any newer devices that were unknown to Win98?Have you tried to install with a batch setup script? I remember that Win9x always installed much smoother with a batch setup script.See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;169539 for more on the Batch98 utility and batch setup scripts. woodchip Posted July 19, 2005 Report Share Posted July 19, 2005 I would say it's a Hardware fault. Not Windows install. Overheating CPU or Faulty Memory. But I Would go For Overheating CPU. Take the side of Computer check the Fan is Clear and turning at fast rev, also put a Desktop fan at the side blowing air in.If this works, then look into getting a better fan Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
