Windows Explorer Search

I have a directory and a few sub directories that hold php programs.

If I try to use explorer search to find which files have instances of strings it returns no results.

As these are just text files I thought that it would find the strings OK.

If I rename the files to .txt then explorer finds the strings fine.

Is there a registry guru here that knows how I can make Explorer regard a .php file as a .txt file and therefore be of use?

I'm sorry, I don't know how to make the Windows Search treat php files like txt files. I had my fare share of problems with Windows Search; not only is it extremely slow, it doesn't find things half of the time.

My rate of finding things increased rapidly after I installed Google Desktop Search. It finds everything I'm looking for very quickly, no matter how old it is, or on which archive folder I've hidden it.

Things got even better after I installed the MSN Desktop Search. It takes much less space than the Google Desktop Search, and honestly I think it finds even more things.

I have currently both installed, but these days I only use the MSN (or Windows) Desktop Search. I will probably eventually uninstall the Google tool.

I suggest that you install one of these desktop search tools. It takes a bit of time for the initial indexing, as well as some megabytes of diskspace, but it is really worth it if you have many documents you need to search. B.t.w. it is also applications that I search a lot, e.g. c, or cpp, or pas files.

Just a quick update in case anybody is interested.

I installed Google Desktop Search as suggested by pwillener.

To get it to search the file types that I need I also had to install the plug-in "Larry's Any Text File Indexer 1.00 by Larry Gadea " that can be downloaded from http://desktop.google.com/plugins/indexitall.html
