The forum's more oriented toward home users. I've never done what you're asking about, but I know that for a Domain Controller, you'll want to run DCPromo to make it a member server before turning it off for the last time, or you'll have residual meta-data floating around in your domain with the old servers name. Personally, I'd fork over the $250 to open a case with Microsoft. It could save you many hours of work! I had a Windows 2000/Exchange 5.5 Server crash and opened a ticket to assist me with the rebuild/cleanup. You might read up as much as you can on it on Microsoft's site, then open a case when you're getting ready to actually do it.
