desktop background problem

Forgive me for posting here "after" posting on pcadvisor.

A mate of mine has a n "interesting" problem -

It looks a though he has had some type of virus, since cleaned up but has left his desktop background with a splash-screen type of thing advising him he needs to run an adware scan ( or something similar) - -when he starts his PC this appears and worries him so much he switches it off !!

I have found no viruses/ trojans - but am unable to change the desktop background. When attempting the fix advised in pcadvisor (editing registry file ), I cannot type anything in the "open" box after selecting start, run - - the place where you type "regedit". If I go into a DOS prompt, I am unable to type anything there either. Trying to boot in SAFE mode is not possible, F2 on boot does nothing - and I know this is the way its done on this particular PC.

He is the only user on this PC, with full admin permissions - -Windows XP Pro by the way.

Gratefull for any help folks - - though I'm not being rude if I do not respond right-away as I have to go to work soon.

Hello TBH1. Although your friend has cleaned up his machine somewhat it will be useful if he could run Highjackthis and present a log to this section of the forum. spyware removal Nel will check it over for him and see if there is anything else that needs attention. Also it will help if you can get a screenshot or a better description of the message on the splash screen with exact wording please. :)

Right - -problem solved by deleting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop.

The reason I could not type anything into either the run command or DOS prompt , and why I couldn't get into SAFE mode is, and your gonna like this - - the reason was that the keyboard had become disconnected !!!! :censored:

What can I say ?? Apart from a thank you to all who 'had a go' here - -I do feel an idiot :)
