File Sstem Search Problem

Recommended Posts

I'm running XP Pro Corp SP2 and I'm having a problem with the file system search function.

When I search a folder, Explorer will not only search all the files and subfolders, it will also start to search all the zipped files. How can I shut this VERY time consuming "feature" off?

Second problem: If I do anything with the files that the search found like move or rename them, the search will start again. This is also very annoying.

Thank you.

I don't know if there is a way to avoid searching inside ZIP files. I haven't used Windows Search in a very long time, since I have installed Windows Desktop Search. It is a very effective indexing and search engine, especially if you have large number of documents. But even if not, it is very much faster than the original Windows Search.

Finally figured out an answer.

If you use a program other than winzip, simply change the extension to that program's extension and the proigram will probably still open the files as long as it supports .zip.

If you use winzip, make up an extension and associate that one with winzip.

Unfortunately, both of these also disable the built in opening of zip files.
