I can have many more applications visible on it that way, the clock now also displays the date, application icons neatly line up over eachother, etc.The default size however is a bit narrow. It doesn't even display the word "Start" on the startbutton by default. So I widen it a bit more, and I have the ideal taskbar.However, whenever I reboot my computer (or even just log in again), the taskbar is the default size again. It's still on the left side, but it is too narrow to be of good use.I've had this problem on several different computers, but I've also seen others who do not have this problem.A related "quirk" seems to be that when I reduce or enlarge the width of my left-aligned taskbar, I can do so only in steps (of about 16 pixels I believe), while others can do this in single-pixel increments.Did anybody else ever run into this? How does your taksbar behave when it is attached to the left side of your screen?(All this moving and resizing is only possible with the taskbar unlocked, of course. I know it can be done easily in linux systems, but windows.? , Why..?? You can move the taskbar anywhere you want. I just dragged my taskbar to the left, and yes, here I can enlarge it continuously to any size I want.Also, my taskbar's size on the left is quite nice and big, and I can see all items, including the Start button.Maybe something is wrong with that particular Windows installation, but what, or how to repair it, I don't know. While other people do not have my problem.Oh, I just noticed that on a computer that I hardly use, and that recently had XP re-installed, the problem does not show, while I know it did on previous installations from the same CD. So it seems to be connected to some configuration change that I commonly perform after installing Windows, and that others don't...It's not connected to installing some weird software, because I have the problem at work also, where Windows is so tight-off that I haven't figured out yet how to install other programs. My collegue does not have my problem, so there must be something I configured differently than him.Some things I already checked:* Taskbar locked or unlocked* Classical or Modern interface* Classical or Modern Start-menu* Quickstart bar on or off* Languagebar on or offAll of these do not seem to make any difference in my problems.I would be very interested hearing from people who also notice the taskbar resizing to go in 16-pixel increments when it is on the side... Problems I have with my taskbartooltip balloons sometimes appear behind the taskbarrebooting without hiding the language bar results in multiple language bars and extraneous bars in the taskbarI have never been able to find a solution for these, but I am not going to install XP from scratch. Richard Cranney Posted June 1, 2006 Report Share Posted June 1, 2006 After having a quick play, make sure that your "lock the toolbar" is not ticked when right clicking on the taskbar. Then drag it to the side that you are wanting it to and this will let you drag it pixel by pixel to the size you want.If your taskbar is on the bottom or the top, ive never known it be able to be pixel by pixel, only doubles, then triples etc as mentioned before.Once you have moved the taskbar, right click and lock the toolbar, this should keep the size when you restart the computer, it worked on mine just now. When I have the Language Bar as part of my Taskbar, I am only able to resize the vertical Taskbar in 16px steps, and after rebooting the size defaults to something very narrow. It really help tremendously with bootup and running times, Windows gets much quicker after a totally clean reinstall. (And I mean clean, I re-format the system partition every time also.) I always make sure my C: partition only contains my operating system and applications that are easy to re-install. No documents and stuff like that. Certainly not the latest version(s).I keep my system pretty clean, and I have not noticed any detoriation in performance over the years.
