And if you were able to do it you stand a good chance of screwing the computer up to the point thats it's basicily a very large paperweight...I wouldn't do it if i were you..Now on to the not recognizing the drives..As the computer boots up , usually you would press like F8 or ESC or whatever to get into the systems B.I.O.S. , Does that computer have the Auto detect Drives option in there somewhere..??If it does, Have you tried that.? , With the hard drive set as Master.. Do you actually know for sure that the hard drive is any good or not..??? That could be it too.. Are there any noises as it boots up.?? Beeps.? If so , How many beeps.??This is a friend's PC, he has windows XP,XP dosen't have DOS at all.. Neither did Win 2000...One thing you could try is downloading The ultimate boot CD., and give that a try, It might be able help as well..I have Ubuntu on my PC,Ha Ha, Why not install that then..?? see my signature..(The PC had been not in use for about one and a half years)Are you sure the battery on the M.O.B.O. is still any good..?? Maybe it went dead and somehow messed things up..
cozofdeath
jason.b.c you really love ubuntu don't you :D I agree with jason.b.s's reply. Sometimes hooking a cdrom on the same cable as your hard drive can do crazy things. But if you absolutely hooked everything up correctly the next thing to do is to make sure your bios settings are correct. And if your sure there is nothing else that can help I would restore all the default bios settings, replace the battery then I would flash the bios. If none of that works you may need a new one. The ultimate boot cd is a great idea and has help me when things like this happen. The homepage for your motherboard is here. There is some good info on that site, even for flashing your bios. There is also a backup/restore guide in case your flash doesn't go as planned.
