Problems configuring a network at home

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this forum and would much appreciate your help and support.

I have just installed a network at home, which includes:

- One D-Link 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch

- One WXP PC

- One W98 SE PC

I have Internet access through a cable modem which is (now) connected to the switch.

From the XP PC I have access to Internet (I'm at he forum right now :) ) but I don`t see the other PC. Working on the W98 PC I have no access to Internet neither see the XP PC.

I've checked workgroup names and they are the same in both PCs. I have them both with dynamic IPs.

Another (important) fact: I used to have the XP with 2 network cards, one of which was connected to the cable-modem and the second one connected to the switch. Then everything worked fine. I had to make changes on the location of the PCs and after these changes I could not establish the internet connection again. My ISP provider instructed me to connect the cable-modem directly to the switch. I did so and since then, as I said, I could get Internet access from the XP machine but lost the connection of the second PC.

I'm sure I am not configuring things properly.

Is ICS turned off on the xp computer? Also, if your not using a NIC, disabling it will help troubleshooting. The Win98 computer should have a private ip address similar to the xp computer (192.168.1.20xp 192.168.1.21 W98)

Try to use the "Network Wizard" in both PC´s, starting in the XP one.

Download the free trial version of Network Magic from www.networkmagic.com and use it to set up your network. The settings will remain after the trial and other parts of the network can be accessed via My Network Places from the start menu.
