DEP Data Execution Protection Issue

Whenever I view pictures that I transferred my camera, the DEP window comes up and halts my action. There is a mixture of jpg's and avi's in the directories. I am viewing the pictures from Windows Explorer in filmstrip and/or thumbnail view. I tried to take Internet Explorer off the list of programs DEP monitors, but this didn't help. I have XP MCE, Athlon x2 +3800, and a canon S2IS. What could be causing this, and how can I stop it? Like I said, I tried taking Internet Explorer, (not windows explorer) off the list of programs. It was the only one on the list.

Here are some things to try for troubleshooting...

Post the DEP error your receiving, that way maybe we can find out more about it.

Turn off hardware and software DEP and try transferring and opening your pictures.

Click Start, run, type cmd.exe and press Enter.

Type attr -r -s -h c:\boot.ini and press Enter.

Type notepad c:\boot.ini and press Enter.

When boot.ini opens your [operating systems] line should be changed to look something like this.

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect /noexecute=alwaysoff /NOPAE

Then save the file and type attr +r +s +h c:\boot.ini in a command windows and press Enter.

Reboot.

The boot.ini file is part of your boot process so an incorrect change could stop your computer from booting. So having a recovery disc around is a good idea.

Having DEP stop something from executing is usually good. Its made to stop executable code from being injected into various parts of your memory. So you may also want to scan them files for malware.
