Starnge Task Manager Usage

Hi all,

I have a Win2K laptop, and for some reason, in the task manager, I have 2 processes that keep flipping between 40 and 60 percent usage. The System Idle Process says 40% one second, then immediately switches to 60%. The System process is doing the exact same thing. When one is 40%, the other is 60%, and vice versa.

I have run thorough virus scans, spyware scans, hijack scans, etc. Nothing seems to correct this. Any ideas?

What is normal is that anything in the Task Manager's processes + System Idle Prcess will be = 100%. What is not normal is that the System process should be 40%~60% while nothing is running.

Is this something that has recently started, or has this always been that way? What I would do in your situation is opening the Services application, then stop every running service until you see the System CPU usage disappear to 0%.

Thanks for the reply. Finally figured it out. Discovered that once I uninstalled the NIC, the problem stopped. As soon as I re-installed, it came back again. Downloaded latest drivers for that particular NIC, but it kept happening. Then decided to uninstall the Linksys wireless utility, and re-install the NIC, and now its working fine. Somehow, for some reason, the Linksys wireless utility wasn't jiving with the other network adpater on the system.
