Default Network Connection

So, here is my situation, I have a router, and a cable modem. Basically, how I have it set up now, is the cable modem has two outputs, I have one going to this machine, and the other going into my router. This works well, as it allows me to share my connection via a router, while having a direct connection on this machine. I also have a connection from the router to this machine, because of the network printer. Now, my problem arises when I have both the LAN and Cable Modem enabled in Window's Network Connections. Windows seems to prefer to use my LAN connection for internet access, rather than my modem. Is there a way to prevent this? Or disable internet access from my router all together?

Connect the modem to the router only. Connect all computers to the router. If you want a direct connection to the internet, set a static IP on your machine and enter it in the DMZ of the router configuration.

The reason why your current default route is to the LAN is because the modem will only recognize one device. Apparently its the router, not your machine.

You are incorrect, right now I am connected to the internet via the modem (I am typing this after all :) ) while the router is also plugged in and operating correctly. I know this because the computer next to me, which is on wireless, also has a connection to the internet. So indeed, both connections work fine, I just want to set windows to use the cable modem adapter before the Ethernet adapter.

I didn't say that you wouldn't be connected to the internet. I just said that the modem only recognizes one device. It makes sense that all computers have internet access. Your question was about the default route to the internet and I gave you a solution.

Then why have the router at all.?

Having a direct link to the net like that kinda defeats the purpose of a router don't you think..?

I'd say get rid of the router and get a network hub "or" Get rid of the direct connection and use only the router for both connections...

For optimum network efficiency, connect your computer to an interface insde the router only. No need to have both.

[edit]While it's possible to select one interface as 'preferred' I don't think the result is what you'll want. I believe all traffic will then use the connection through the router and not the connection to the cable modem unless you're actually going to the IP Address of the cable modem. It also doesn't gain you any speed as all Internet traffic still traverses the cable modem. Your computer that is using two connections still competes for bandwidth that passes through the router. It needlessly complicates your network, and possibly presents a security risk. Does the computer that is connected to the cable modem have a firewall?

After I read all these, I think, you are still in the problem. Your requirement implies that you need to communicate to internet through cable modem connection evenif the router connection enabled.

I am also faced similar situation. What I should do is that just enabled the Internet connection sharing option on the cable modem connection and change IP on the router connection (class C).

I think this solution also help you to resolve it. Try it and inform me the result.
