Unable to access adminstrator folder

Hi,

I recently added a new user to Windows XP. When it asked me whether or not I'd like to add it as an administrator or a normal user, the normal user wasn't available. I didn't realize at the time, but that's because no administrative user was created before this.

I added the new administrator, and when it asked me whether or not I'd like to make the current user (the default, old administrator that was created by windows) folders private, I selected yes. After this, I realized that the old "administrator" default user was gone after logging out. I can now only login as the administrator I just created.

This wouldn't be a problem, except now I can't access my old administrator folder because it was made private.

C:\Documents & Settings\Administrator\ is unaccessible to this new administrator.

Does any one know how I can retrieve those files?

Login as Administrator with no password.

I would but there's simply no secondary user now. The only user available to me (which logs in by default, but I can see all users if I log off or "switch user") is the new administrator.

Is there any third party software that unprotects the folder?

The 'Administrator' user is always available. You should be able to login to it the way cozofdeath suggested. Have you tried it?

Well, there's an administrator, but this is the new one I created. I guess what I am saying is, even if I log in as an administrator, I cannot see C:\Document & Settings\Administrator\... It says that it's protected. Currently the document and settings is located at C:\Document & Settings\Mike, which is the new administrator I created. Any idea?

Have you tried pressing control+alt+del twice when your at the login screen? It should give you the Windows classic login screen. At that you should be able to type administrator for the user and leave the password blank. Windows require that there is always a administer and admin group, so at installation a default administrator account is created but it cannot be seen at the xp login screen.

Well, there's an administrator...

Maybe we are not clear; there can be accounts with administrator permission (created by you), and then there is the default Windows administrator account with the name 'Administrator' (and default blank password). This is the account to which the folder belongs. If you log in the way cozofdeath suggested, you should be able to access the folder (and change permissions, if needed).

hi i couldn't login as administrator/no pw through traditional login screen, but I was able to make the new administrator as an owner of the folder.
