Hi. I Have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and i have been usingt it for 2 years without any problems, but recently, like two days ago for more precision i started to see this problem:

An instance of svchost.exe is using 99 % of the processor and 140 Mb of RAM. If i terminate this process the sound is gone. And explorer.exe start to use 80-90 % of the processor, i am positive that i have no virus in my machine and i haven't install any software or update.

What can be causing this problem ?. Any guideline will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

I had a similar problem some time ago. svchost is providing services to other applications; it is not doing anything by itself. So if svchost is using large amounts of CPU time, you have to find what application is causing this.

What I did to find the culprit was to open Task Manager, Processes tab, then start ending all user processes, one by one. When svchost drops its high CPU usage, then you know the last process you ended was the one causing the problem.

Please let us know how it goes and what caused it.
