IzzTEK Posted January 3, 2007 Report Share Posted January 3, 2007 I have a Dell Dimension 8400. and my parents recently got a new Dell computer that came with a Windows MCE upgrade disk. I guess (from what I heard) Dell is allowing customers to put upgraded operating systems on other dell computers even if they did not come with it. So, I tried upgrading, and the computer restarted and a blue screen popped up saying, "We cannot detect a CD rom drive" and then had a set a useless instructions about connecting a CDrom drive (I have two DVD drives). So then I start up the computer and try the setup again, and it says i have the wrong product key...which makes no sense. Is there any way to fix this? Could this have done something to my Windows Files (an incomplete setup) that could screw something up? if so, is there any way to reverse it? Even if you succeed with the upgrade, you may later have a problem with the activation.I don't know where you heard this, but I would advise you to check with Dell before you attempt the upgrade. cozofdeath Posted January 3, 2007 Report Share Posted January 3, 2007 You probably used a OEM cd to upgrade. In other words its locked to the hardware/bios and can really only be used with the computer it came with. If the computer would have the exact same hardware then it would work.
