File Types

Windows stores the file type with the file name. Depending on the folder options, the file type is not always displayed, but is always there. No difference between 2K or XP (or earlier versions).

I don't understand your problem with file names with spaces in it - how are you trying to open this file? Double-clicking from Windows Explorer or My Documents should always open it correctly (if the file association is set correctly).
