nortons on the fritz?

just started having some issues, and i have a feeling my copy of nortons may have been compromised, about a week ago it decided that it had expired. on teh same day it became impossible to log into log into messenger, as well as a couple of online forums i use regularly, both of which i was logged out of and everytime i try to log back in the login works successfully but when the new screen displays i am logged out again. I decided to click the button to renew the subscription, and after a minute or 2 it told me i had 306 days left on the subscription. it then asked for me to update check, which i did, it updated successfully, stated that the update was done yesterday, then started with the red lettering telling me to check for updates again. i had also been getting the red warning for a full system scan since the last time i did a scan, so i did a new scan last night, came up with 7 threats, mostly already neutralised junkmail, but it has listed that that scan was done on the 30/3/2007! has anyone else had similar issues? should i unload and reload nortons? are there any checks i should run?

Is it a cracked version? I would definitely uninstall it and get a good freeware malware scanner and see if it picks up anything new. Most malware writers will specifically attack or shutdown popular products like Norton or McAfee because then they can infect most of the home computer population. Also, if you don't update the virus scanner program itself (not the definitions), when a exploit/hole is found and released, it will be open to attack. A good reason to not have a cracked version. But I'm not saying you didn't legitimately pay for it. What other protection do you have on your computer?
