Windows XP and Itunes

So....I go out and buy a brand new Ipod Nano with 8 gigs of memory to put in most of my music CDs on. I download Itumes from the Apple website, and then try to install it and I get this Error Message:

Error 1316. A network error occurred whie attempting to read from C:\Windows\Installer\itunes.msi

and then some gobblety gook about having to close the installation process.

Not to worry, I think. I'll just call Apple support up and they can help through the problem. NOT! We go through a bunch of cleanup of old Quicktime files and a few other things - with no luck - and the tech person kicks me upstairs to a higher authority. The HA tells me this is a Windows problem, not an Apple problem.

So...I call Windows, fully prepared to put down $35.00 for the fix. NOT! It's now $79.00 to fix the problem, they tell me! I think to myself, Wait a sec - they want to charge me 80 bucks to fix a problem with THEIR software? I (politely as I could) decline and decide the heck with it. I don't need the damned Ipod that badly. I don't want to pay (effectively, if you add in the 80 buck "fix!") over $300 dollars to have an Ipod.

I will just take it back and forget the whole thing. I like the idea of them but I'll be damned if I'll fork over 80 bucks to Bill Gates & Co. Better to just get a MP3 player which can double as a removeable hard drive.

But before I do that....I'm hoping to find a guru on this forum that just might have some experience with this problem. I hope, I hope, I hope. Please be out there, Mr/Ms Guru! :(

This is a very common error you are experiencing, and it happens with many software installations. Who exactly's fault it is I don't know, but there is an easy way to fix it. There is perfectly no need to pay for "support" people who have no clue...

At the same time you should also check the version of your Windows Installer. Open Windows Explorer, then check C:\WINDOWS\system32\msu.dll - it should be 3.1.4000.2435 or newer.
