MOHAA - won't initialise!

Stuck with a problem myself - oddly enough can't initialise MOH-Allied Assault "when patched to 111". It worked okay in the past, and asides from the usual I never had a problem such as this.

What happens? Well, it just goes to brown screen (with movable cursor) and stays there. (It's meant to flash brown quickly then EA logo comes up.)

What have I tried? I am using direct x 9 now. All other games work perfectly. Using 40.72s as Nvidia gf TI 4400 I have, with 1GB PC2100 ram and Athlon XP 1900+ in XP Pro (SP1). Direct X diagnosis okay, Creative Audigy repair/diagnosis utility reports hunky dorey also. Reinstalled/uninstalled - no joy. Catch (or should I say patch) 22 situatiuon. Read Paul2002s FAQs but nothing to help.... What else is there?

BIOS - Installed it as I wanted to give Spearhead add-on a blast. Problems aside, this works okay but as you know it patches MOHAA first to v111. I have yet to check but I may see if this is optional. There is a previous version110, though I do not know if it would help or is available. Have emailed EA (like that's going to help). Downloading Spearhead patch v2.22> (or whatnot) but it's a 54mb download!

I'm not a happy bunny - I don't want to reinstall the O/S, so I can get MOHAA working but now have redundant game(s). Bloody computers... (Everything else is fine.) Help me please - before I do something I regret... computer foot window 1st floor and pieces springs to mind.

This screen.. would you say 'brown' or more of a 'tan' colour?

Regardless.. The EA site (bless 'em, they may release bug ridden games that need numerous patches to get anywhere near their potential, but EA have a nice little help site...) recommends thus:

Why am I getting a Gray or Tan screen lockup after I launch the game?

Answer

This is most commonly the result of some trouble communicating with the sound card in the computer. Make sure the sound card is configured properly:

1. Go to the control panel and double click on the Multimedia icon.

2. Click on the Audio tab. Change the Playback Preferred Device to the name of the sound card in the computer.

4. Click on Apply, then OK or Close.

If the sound card is selected properly and the trouble still exists try lowering the sound acceleration level.

To lower the sound acceleration:

1) Left Click on START

2) Left Click on RUN

3) Type "dxdiag" in the box

4) Left Click on OK - This will launch the directX diagnostic tool.

5) Left Click on the SOUND tab

6) Locate "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" under directX features.

7) Move slider to the second notch from the left. It should read "basic acceleration" after doing so.

8) Left Click on EXIT to return to the desktop

It's all here too...

Mr Jingles.... (all down to a misbehaving mouse)

Capt Ordep, sir, thanks for that - I was losing control dammit. Gotta hold things together, yessir. By the way, you're looking exceptionally well today (you changed your hair?) Well, I mean of course your avatar. Good choice by the way. I'll have to get something myself.... can you just choose anything?? Sorry for being cheeky and insubordinate. You can get your own back when and when (no ifs I hope) I finally meet you boys online for a quick blast.

IP, you the man. How you and Ordep manage to navigate your way so easily through cyberspace is awesome. I just blunder around like the enemies in single player Battlefield do...

Very well linked, but in this instance it proved not to be the case. Dunno if this is common knowledge yet, but there is an incompatibility issue with Belkin Nostrom N30 mouse (the one with the force(?)-feedback). I did try all I could with the sound, as it seemed the logical route. Crazy thing is I tried and tried with MOHAA in SAFE mode, and no joy. I'd expected it to disable all running devices (sound also).

Anyway, enough waffle, that's another FAQ then - MOHAA "patched to 111" will not run when N30 mouse is enabled (I disabled it in Device Manager - requires a restart). So, fault testing does work then - shame the old booting (foot to device) method doesn't work.

Thanks very much guys for your support. Couldn't have done it without ya - was ruminating on showing EA games what I'd learned in the art of warfare from playing their games so much lately. Damn. Guess I'll have to leave the blood letting to somebody else.

PS - weird that MOHAA runs okay with the device when not patched. Nice one EA. Oh yeah, there may be a generalised (rather than specific n30) incompatibility with more than one mouse enabled. Can't be doing with checking that one out. Had enough for one day. Happy again! Let the killing begin...
