chris_p Posted June 5, 2007 Report Share Posted June 5, 2007 I've spent the last two days trying to network my two computers (a laptop and desktop). They were networked just fine until I set up Apache on the desktop and stupidly changed Network ID. I don't know if installing Apache is the cause, or fiddling with Network ID. I'm running XP on both computers, and have gone through the Network Setup Wizard many times, first on the desktop, which is connected to the internet. The two computers are connected with a network crossover cable (the laptop tuns into the desktop). In addition to this, on the desktop I can't seem to run ipconfig or ping from the command line. I get '..not recognized as an internal or external command..' Please can someone help - I don't want to spend the rest of my life trying to reconnect my two computers. mcb2001 Posted June 5, 2007 Report Share Posted June 5, 2007 have you tried disabling your network card, then reboot, enable it, run the config again and then check that you have a static IP, since you need a static IP for it to work perfectly...I would also suggest that you check your workgroup, to make sure you got the same workgroup on both computers.And last of all, the "is not reconized" problem points to some problems with windows not actually thinking you have a network card at all, and that the network setup wizard might be setting up the IEEE1394 (firewire) instead? chris_p Posted June 5, 2007 Author Report Share Posted June 5, 2007 I disabled/re-enabled the card, and went through the network setup on both computers. My IP address is changing and there's 'enable IEEE 802.1X' checked in the Authentication tab. I'm sure my IP was static before, so I don't know why it's changed, and I don't know what to do about it. By the way, there is SOME sort of connection happening because I get the bubble down the bottom saying Local Area Connection now connected at 100Mbps. Earlier I saw both computers in the workgroup, I just couldn't access one of them - now I'm only seeing one computer in there on the desktop and on the laptop.
