Windows network timeout and my network places

Alright this is a two part question.

First of, when you have a PC on a network and access a shared folder it is automatically added to "my network places" for quick access. And that is fine, until you leave the network. And if you change network often it can be a nuisance having all those broken links to network folders. Now i know there is a way to disable this function. You can type a command in "run..." get to some sort of management console and add the entry where you can change the behavior. I did it once but i cant remember the command. Can anybody help me?

Second, sort of an extension to the first, when you try to access a network folder that is no longer available, i.e. via a shortcut, explorer tries to connect for some time before timeing out. Is there some way to cahnge the timeout? So that instead of i.e. 20 seconds it brings up the error in 5 seconds?

Not sure about #2, but you should be able to disable the stuff being added to My Network Places by going to any folder, go to Tools > Folder Options, Go to the View tab, and the first option should be "Automatically search for network folders and printers", and if you uncheck that then windows wont crawl your network for shares to add to My Network Places.
