Problem installing (upgrading) XP

Recommended Posts

I have a 320 gig drive I'm trying to put XP on. I have a Win98 cd, so I got the upgrade disc (which I needed to repair a different XP installation.) I've been told that I can use the upgrade cd to format the drive, then when it asks I just have to insert the 98cd for proof of prior ownership, then continue with the install. Seems legitimate to me. It just skips the step of installing 98 and installing XP over it.

The problem is that it wants me to enter the administrator password. Is there any way to get past that without actually installing 98 first and then installing XP over it? That seems like a messy way to do it with more potential problems down the road than trying to do it as a clean install like I'm trying to do.

Any ideas? Thanks.
