Can Cyrillic (Russian) games be played in spanish/english XP?

Hello.

Does there exist any way of playing Cyrillic games (in this case, a Russian) in Castilian(spanish) / english XP? The game (Parkan 2) is installed without problems (unless the installation although it is in Russian the lettering turns out to be rare just as when it is brought in on some Russian page without having the Cyrillic codification) and also it is started but once inside the lettering keeps on being changed or simply they go out squares.

I know that the problem can be solved from: Control panel-> regional Options, of language, of date and hour-> regional Configuration and of language-> choosing " Russian " instead of " Spanish, Spain " and rebooting again the PC. But although the game is fine then another problem appears - there stop working the majority of programs based on Castilian / English (antiviruses, firewalls etc ...) or they change some parameters and configuration.

Is there some way (emulator, patch, update, change of code etc ...) of avoiding that?

I had similar problems in the past with Japanese software on English Windows - it would simply not display properly. With Windows XP, I can activate the Japanese fonts, and most applications will display correctly. But not all, for whatever reasons. There is an application that can be installed that will display it correctly, but right now I don't remember its name - I will check tomorrow at the office. But the application is only for Japanese/Chinese/Korean.

But there may be a similar application for Cyrillic - check Goooooooooooooooooooogle.

If it is the last solution - I have no other remedy that to learn these languages :D

In fact, I did a post in this forum because I did not manage to find other references in any other forum or Google (all my searches ended up by failing on pages of patches for different games, it must be because I used badly the combinations of words in the searcher).

The CJK software is http://www.njstar.com/, but that obviously won't help you.

Let's go back to the beginning and try something. Open Control Panel | Regional and Language Options | tab Advanced. Set 'Language for non-Unicode programs' to 'Russian'. I don't know if you have to restart Windows after this.

Does this improve the situation?

Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Advanced -> Russian. Yes, it requires a reboot. That's what i'm using now and it works without problems for cyrillic-based programms. But to work with spanish-based programs i have to switch back to "Spanish" and reboot again. That's a bit annoying and i stil can not enhance both cyrillic and spanish.

The CJK page you listed here is really usefull, now i'm going to try to do new search including "PALM cyrillic" or something similar to that in Google (of course XP isn't the PALM OS but at last it could bring me to some site that also provides support for XP).

The problem you encounter with Russian and Spanish applications on English Windows is really caused by the creators of these softwares, especially the Russian one. They use Russian encoding - which works just fine on a Russian operating system. But on English Windows it needs a little trick, such as the one I've shown you. So that will make show the Cyrillic characters. But not the Spanish at the same time - really nothing you can do about it.

If these software writers had used Unicode instead of Russian and/or Spanish - no problem at all: you could use any language application on any operating system version at any time. Russian, Chinese, German, Arabic, ...

But the problem is that many software writers just don't think beyond their own computer. If it works on their own computer, the software must be OK. Well, think again...

Well, i must have explained myself incorrectly on last reply - actually, there is no conflict between spanish/english programs (my system is based on spanish, and spanish alfabet has same letters as english language does and even some more, so that's not the problem and that's why i use "spanish" and "english" therms equally in posts and that may confuse people, sorry, that's my fault).

I've been looking for tools that could enable my xp to see russian menus without your "little" (althought, usefull) trick without results. It seems they just do not exist or have been hided well by KGB B) .

Anyway, i have finished that russian game and now configured my PC back to working state.

Also it has been the whole pleasure to have been provided with your support and I'm grateful again to you for the rapidity with which you answered me, hope not to have wasted your time.

P.S.: if I have news again on the topic or find something that could have value I will put it right here so that the others could make use of it also.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I understand now your issue with Spanish / English.

For me, Spanish and English is not the same. English (US-ASCII) occupies the characters between (hexadecimal) 0x20 ~ 0x7F. This is the original 7-bit ASCII code. Anything over this (0x80+) is no longer part of English. E.g. Spanish characters like 'ç' or 'ñ' are outside of that range, and there would already be a conflict with Russian, unless Unicode encoding is used.
