Laptop Fan/Heatsink

My friend has an HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook that is currently experiencing overheating issues. She was vacuuming her apartment and knocked her laptop from the couch to the floor (i.e., two feet or so). She booted it up and though it worked at first, she began experiencing problems that I attributed to overheating. She ran SpeedFan and sure enough, the CPU was idling at 70C and climbing. I think that the drop may have jarred the heatsink and that it just needs to be reseated. However, she says that the CPU fan is not running. It has been tested for physically problems and the fan spins freely. Is there anyway to easily test if the fan is in working order? She said SpeedFan did not return any fan RPM values, which I thought was odd, until I ran it on my laptop and discovered it didn't give me any values either. Any suggestions for testing the fan would be greatly appreciated. Also, this is being done long distance, so my inspection of the laptop is very limited. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the laptop will need to be opened and checked for any loose or damaged connections. Have her ship you the laptop. While your at it, check for a wall of lint on the heat sink.

first: speedfan doesnt always give the values of the fans, if the fans are not on full speed (or a bit slower, but not much!) they probably cant get enough power to return the speed values.

second: are u sure that the cpu fan runs freely? if not, set the control of the fan to manual (in speedfan) and maxout the speed. if it runs, it probably means ur cpu heatsink got loose from the cpu. try to open the laptop, and push the heatsink softly, if it moves, it surely got loose :P if not, u can eliminate that part from ur list....
