Add/Remove Programs issue with Win2K machine.

Every time I try to uninstall any programs, wheter it's via the Add/Remove Programs dialog or if I use the uninstall.exe for the specific program/folder, I get the same error -- cannot find INSTALL.LOG.

Apparently this is a Windows system file that has somehow been deleted.

Any ideas on how I can uninstall applications now?

I've got over 20GB of music on the compute, so a reformat and OS installation would really not be preferred.

TIA!

Every installation has its own install.log file, with information for the uninstaller what to uninstall. If the install.log file is missing, then it can't be uninstalled. Did you, by any chance, use some "cleanup" program that removed all your install.log files?

Anyway, to get your install.log files back you either

  • restore them from backup
  • reinstall all installed programs with missing install.log files

Some programs cannot be reinstalled as long as there are some partial uninstall info around. These need to be cleaned up with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
