Defragmentation of external harddisk on NAS server

Hi'

I hope that one of you members can help me with a "trivial" issue, that I haven't been able to solve through extended web search and trials.

I have an external 250 Gb harddisk on a D-Link DNS-323 server attached direcly to my home network. I would like to do a normal defragmentation on this harddisk using either Windows XP or Vista. But it seems that these OS can only see C: drive and not my network harddisk, when I open the feature for disk defragmentation. And I can not find a way to attach my external drive in order to do the defragmentation.

Any good advices on how to attach my external disk and then defragment it?

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

Can you see the drive on Windows Explorer? If so, can you right-click, Properties, then start the defragger from there?

If not, can you try another defragger, such as Diskeeper Lite? (You can find it on various download sites such as Majorgeeks or Filehippo.)

It seems that my major issue using either Windows or Diskkeeper ia, that my external harddisk (G:) have to be configured somewhere within Windows.

"It's necessary for SYSTEM to have full control over a directory folder in order for Diskkeeper to have access to move files. This is because System access is necessary to defragment files safely. This is a security feature that is governed by the Windows C2 security requirements."

"If the root-level directory folder does not have SYSTEM set for full control (as seen in the PERMISSION section under the SECURITY tab in the Windows Properties dialog box, Diskkeeper will not display the volume in the volume list under some circumstances."

It sounds logically. But even if I'm logged in as Administrator on my PC, I can not find Windows Property / Security / Permission tab.

Please guide my from START to this tab. :D
