Recovery of Corrupted Folder

Hi all,

I have an Win XP SP2 machine and was working to a folder say "Backup" meanwhile the system got shutdown by an accident and after restarting the computer the folder name has changed from Backup to "Smily Face Specail Character"ACKUP. And now I am unable to access this folder, please help me out. its giving Error x:\folder name is not accessible "The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect"

The folder name has changed like this

previously : Backup

now: []ackup but if i check it from cmd it starts with Smily FaceACKUP

The file system of the partion is FAT32

Please help me out :(

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

FAT32 partitions do much more easily corrupt than NTFS partitions, it is therefore recommended for everyone with important data to convert to NTFS.

Do you have any important data in the corrupt folder? If so, it may be irrecoverably lost, unless you have a backup.

Run CHKDSK on the partition with the corrupt folder, which will restore partition integrity, but your corrupt folder with all its data may be lost.

P.S. you say you can see the folder name form the Command Prompt? If so, you may be able to rename it from there

rename ☺ackup Backup

Also try other Command Prompt commands, e.g. dir /x to see the 8.3-type file names; it may help you to delete / rename, etc.

though I can see the exact name of the folder from cmd but unable to ren even to delete. I have important files in that dir, is there any other way to recover

I have tried from CMD as follows

run the dir command

mark & copy the directory name

then tried to rename it

ren ☻ACKUP back123

but an error has appeared "The system cannot find the file specified. :( "

First . The good idea : You have to create image your HDD.

You have to use chdsk or norton disk doktor.

If it dont't correct error, you can use likes Program(Recovery my files)

Have you checked the DOS 8.3 names, and tried to rename it from that?

Also, it it a black smiley face ☻ or whithe ☺ - it makes a difference, you know?
