Feck Posted October 7, 2008 Report Share Posted October 7, 2008 Hello, and thank you in advance for your time ,PC: HP a1100yOS: XP ProfessionalCPU: (was) Celeron D 2.8GHz (is now) Pentium 4 650 3.4GHzSo a guy trades me this a1100y for a favor last year - I like it as it's easy to upgrade. I ditch the one 80g IDE Hdd for two SATA Hdds (350/500g), swap the 512mb for 2gb ddr, install two new optical drives, & so on.The other day I swapped out the Celeron that was in it for a Pentium 4 (a bit faster + HT right?) Well...Xp boots up normally, then tells me my "New hardware is installed, but might not work properly until I restart" so I do - but then can't boot at all. Not Safe, no "Last Good Config", just an immediate restart when I select the OS. Here's the weird part: I use an app called TuneUp utilities and there's an option at startup for "XP Professional (TuneUp Backup)" (it's right there with regular ol' XP Professional) which just so happens to boot up like nothing ever happened. I know, right? If I do a System Restore to the morning I installed the P4 it boots just fine, tells me I have new hardware and need to restart, then I'm right back to square one. So...I'm thinking it's a driver/boot/mbr thing? I dunno...Just seems that I oughta be able to remedy this without a repair install since I can boot into the TuneUp backup and/or normally after System Restore, ya know? Feck Posted October 8, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 8, 2008 Thank you :) So, let me ask you this:Do you think I should perform a System Restore, power down, install the old CPU * (so that I can get back into XP normally - without booting through TuneUp), DL and install SP3, then attempt to reinstall the Pentium with the hope that the new service pack will accommodate the newer processor?Or:Do you think installing SP3 (which I've been intentionally avoiding btw, as I'm a natural born cynic) might be sufficient? In other words, after installing SP3 I might potentially reboot (w/o Sys Rstr) and find my issue has been corrected?I am by no means an expert in this area (he says, stating the obvious) but I've worked my way out of worse jams than this by repairing Windows, acquiring proper (or rolling back) drivers, etc. - and it at least seems to me that this issue is just the matter of a simple missing element (given my ability to boot and run just fine through the TuneUp option). But then I'm wrong at least as often as I'm right :D *as I've mentioned; a Sys Rstr puts everything back to normal - until Windows automatically installs the drivers for the chip and tells me to reboot. Feck Posted October 9, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 9, 2008 Thanks again, Pat.I was over at Intel recently getting everything they had for me in the way of updates/drivers/etc, and it doesn't look like they've got anything I don't already have ;) . I'm gonna attempt a fixmbr/fixboot as soon as I get a sec and, assuming this does me no good, I will dl sp3. No matter what - I'll post back with results. Feck Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Share Posted October 13, 2008 Whew, long night... Well, The RC didn't fix anything (fixboot/fixmbr), nor did SP3...nor did the repair install of XP. After executing the repair install, Windows says it's saving all of my data and such, reboots, and the endless reboot festival resumes...and of course now my TU Backup is long gone so I have no (working) OS to boot into. Thank god for Acronis - at least I got back to where I was before the attempts. I have to reformat and reinstall everything now don't I? It's okay, just tell me...
