How can I access my documents in Windows XP?

Okay, I have just installed an external drive enclosure for the sole purpose of moving files from an old hard drive (the computer now defunct) onto my present computer but when I try to access my documents from the external drive (drive F:) I receive the message that access is denied. I thought of changing the name of the my document folder but received the same message.

Is there a work around to access these files?

I have also changed the hard drive, replacing it with another and get the same result (access denied). Both of these drives were the main drives in different computers, where the motherboards fried. So they were set up as drive C: with the xp operating system installed.

I cannot undo the making of my folder private in the documents and settings folder including un-checking the read only feature and trying to make the folders accessible by using the share folder facility function. I have also tried past answers on yahoo from people who have the same problem and still no luck. I have admin rights and using xp home.

Please! Has anyone any more suggestions
