Empalmado24 Posted January 8, 2009 Report Share Posted January 8, 2009 What I have done:I built the computer from new parts. I Loaded WXP Professional. I loaded motherboard and burner drivers. I hooked up the new computer and the old computer to our home network so they could share a network drive for the files and settings transfer. I downloaded AVG anti-virus and c-cleaner. I Loaded Office Enterprise 2007. At that point the computer was running like a champ. Then I ran the files and settings transfer wizard. Right at he end I got the message the program needed to shut down and it froze. I restarted the computer from task manager. Some of the old computer files and settings came over. None of the files from the old computers owner's church software made the trip. Her outlook made the trip but she couldn’t remember her passwords so no access to it. The system became very unstable with frozen screens and non-responsive programs. I tried the Files and transfer wizard again but it started hanging at the end again. It did not shut down but hung for over 3 hours. I restarted the computer again from task manger. Nothing changed. The owner of the old computer has backed up all her important files already. I was going to just reformat the hard drive and clean install the OS, office, c-cleaner, and avg. Then she can start from scratch and reload the church software and all her backed up files. As far as outlook goes I’m assuming if she creates a new identity (which I think she has to do since she can’t remember her passwords) that all her e-mails from her road runner account will be there just not her saved ones. Questions for you:Do you know of a way I can just save her old e-mails off the old computer and give them to her on a disk (all in outlook express)? Do you think I should take a different course of action?How do I make the system boot from disc for the reformat? Do I have to change the bios? However, the File and Setting Transfer hang *could* be due to the antivirus software. Can you try that again with AVG either disabled or uninstalled?P.S. HEHE!I ended up reformating the HD and started from Scratch. I then networked the two comps and manually moved select files over that way. My only problem at this point is that i cant get my outlook express files (.dbx) to import into my outlook 2007.
