New install, ethernet very slow.

Recommended Posts

I'm playing with this old HP computer. I just loaded XP onto it, using a small hard drive from another computer, and everything seemed fine. I hooked it up with a cat6 to a spare port on my d-link dir-655 to access the internet from it - and restarted.

A connection was made but it's very slow. I've got an 8MB broadband but this poor computer is only downloading like 1 kb or less per second. I can't download anything to get it set up.

I thought it might be something with the bios, since the ethernet port is on the mobo (P4SD-LA). I couldn't download online so I used another computer, on the same switch, to find what I think is the updated driver, copied it to a CD, then loaded it from the CD onto the slow computer.

That didn't do anything I noticed. It's still slow as can be. Any ideas on what's making this thing so slow?
