catbags
HiI am using Vista Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. My notification area showed I had 3 updates available which I agreed to download. I successfully downloaded 2 updates then received a message that 1 download had failed. On clicking the help button it said that an unknown error occurred during the download. I thought a reboot would sort the problem but when I went to reboot I got the following message :-"Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer" this message stayed on screen forever!I shut down the computer using the power button and then rebooted. Again I received the above message but this time after a while the computer shut down and rebooted until it showed the message yet again. I rebooted and once more it came back to the same message.I decided to do a System Restore going back to a time prior to the download. On pressing F8 during boot-up I got to the Repair Page and selected "Safe Mode". I got the usual screen showing Windows Files being loaded, i.e. drivers etc. The computer then started to reboot itself in "Normal Mode" and not "Safe Mode". Again it reached the stage where it showed the original message concerning "Configuring Updates", closed itself down and went into the reboot/configure updates loop. I tried Restore again, this time using Safe Mode with networking but again got the same results. I tried the other options but I still can't get to a page where I can select system restore. The laptop will not open in Safe Mode although it goes through the motions of Loading Windows Files every time but then continues in Normal Mode. Can anyone suggest a way to access the "System Restore" option.Cheers, Dave

catbags
Have you tried to boot into Last Known Good Configuration? Thanks for replying; Yes I've tried that and it still refuses to start. I'm still permanently stuck in this loop where it shows configuring updates (it never shows any progress, always 0%) then closes down and reboots in Normal Mode. It will not boot up in Safe Mode. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Do you have an external backup? If so, you may need to restore to the time when you took the backup.Another alternative is to perform a Windows Repair; do you have your original Windows disk? I then tried the System Restore option and this showed I had successfully restored to a time 3 days before I got the loop problem but it still goes into the loop on reboot!!!Do you know if it's possible to remove the hard drive and reclaim the files I am looking for through an external dock of some description?
