bvw Posted March 18, 2004 Report Share Posted March 18, 2004 I had 6 years of using Morse Code using a Morse Lamp in my Merchant Navy days.Only problems I ever had was with the Royal Navy signallers........boy they were fast!When we were deep-sea we had no use of Radar and it was never turned on, nothing to see. One dark overcast night, pitch black and in the middle of nowhere, I was on the Bridge alone, as was the norm, quietly stood there staring into the inky blackness, dreaming of what my mates were doing back at home and wishing I was with them.All of a sudden out of nowhere this red light started signalling me, frightened the life out of me! It was the Royal Navy on night time manoevures, just about the whole flaming fleet surrounded us showing no navigation lights. I also learnt in the Forces, just the basics but found it interesting so kept it up for several years after leaving, just as an interest. The Navy in stealth mode or darken ship in my day. :DFrightened the life out of me Popeye :D There I was quietly contemplating life and the universe, steaming along in the middle of nowhere, nothing to be seen anywhere in the pitch blackness and then surrounded by the flaming British Fleet who were totally blacked out!I turned on the radar to see how many ships were there, to find a dozen or so of 'em all around us not showing a single light.Also for a few days after we were "buzzed" by fighter planes, probably using us for target practice....they would come at us from astern and it wasn't until they were over us that you heard the roar of their engines.....mind blowing!
