Racism is a scourge....I feel so ashamed to be Scottish :blush:

IF you are born a sycamore tree in Scotland life can be a bit of a beech.

A university exhibition is claiming Scots are racist against trees introduced into the country.

It seems we're sick of the 'invasive' sycamore, with growers plumping for native beech trees instead.

But last night the exhibition called Racism in our Forests was branded 'political correctness gone mad'.

A poster for the zoology museum student exhibition, at Aberdeen University, claims: 'The problem with the sycamore seems to be one of principle: it is non-native and thus unwanted within our woodland.'

Kalim Uddin, 32, a Scottish Anti-Racism group youth development officer, said: 'This belittles what racism actually is and the kind of harm it does to communities.

'If they are saying you can be racist towards trees, then it is definitely giving mixed signals to youngsters.

'It's fair enough if they're trying to make a point about conservation but by using these terms to grab attention they end up trivialising what racism really is.'

Mohammed Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Govan, said: 'We are living in a very difficult world right now and people should use their words carefully.

'There are some tensions between east and west and, in this context, I think the terminology used to describe trees is unnecessary.'

The exhibition was due to open to the public this weekend.

In a comparison to ethnic cleansing, the poster warns: 'Should we refuse to allow these changes by manipulating our communities to contain species that we believe should rightfully exist there?

'Or do we allow non-natives to exist within our native communities in a response to environmental change and natural succession?'

Sycamores were brought to Scotland from France in the 15th century and now make up five per cent of Scottish woodland.

Planting sycamores has been banned in some forests because they grow so quickly and some local authorities have stopped homeowners from growing them because they block the light.

Museum curator Martyn Gorman said: 'The poster is the work of undergraduates and we have pinned it up for others to see.'

:P Devanski..don't be too concerned about the TREES..they just sort of "hang around" MODERNISM and POLITICAL-CORRECTNESS are raising their ugly heads in most countries....imagine what will happen,though,when the ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT tries to acquire the real Scottish recipe for HAGGIS! :P
