don't ask Posted May 4, 2004 Report Share Posted May 4, 2004 Hi thereWe did have a network of 3 machines, but put 2 of them in dock while we were moving around somewhat. Now we are settled, I want to hook up 2 of them on the network we used to have.The network works fine but I can't get the 2nd machine to access the internet through the network. I have just remembered that we used the 2nd machine as a standalone for internet use while the 1st machine was being repaired. I think I changed some settings on the 2nd machine but can't for the life of me remember what.I am sure it is a very simple tweak that I need to do. Agent Smith Posted May 4, 2004 Report Share Posted May 4, 2004 Hi don't ask, as both of your machines are running windows 98, I would suggest that the easiest option for you would be to run the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) wizard on the pc which has the internet connection. During this process, you will be prompted to create a floppy disc. This disc can then be used on your other machines to automatically set up the network to use the internet via the first machine.If you wish to try and do it manually, I would think that the information you probably changed, was the gateway entry for TCP/IP. This should be set to the IP address for the machine with the internet connection. However, you may have changed some other settings as well/or instead.Regards. Mr. M. don't ask Posted May 5, 2004 Author Report Share Posted May 5, 2004 Thanks Mr M.I have to pop out right now (well as soon as I have finished my Weetabix) so will potter about with the machine this afternoon.As far as I can remember, the only thing I changed on the second machine was in IE - properties - connections. When that machine was previously on the network it was set to 'never dial a connection' - for the period it was used as a standalone for the internet, it was changed to ' always dial my default connection'. When we set up the network again it was changed back to 'never dial a connection' but I just get 'cannot find server' .. 'the page cannot be displayed'.Maybe I am a liar and tweaked some other setting :( :blush: I am not very technically minded these days.Hubby keeps saying 'bet you it is that bloomin' Zone Alarm again' but neither of us touched it !! (Sorry - just a comment to reflect that when the network was originally set up we spent days trying to get it going - hubby installed and uninstalled time and time again and it turned out to be a Zone Alarm setting!)Will let you know.Thanksd..'. a.. Is it possible that during the repair process, certain functions of the ICS were removed/disabled.Here is the M$ troubleshooting guide for ICSM$ Kb238135I still think your quickest and easiest option will be to rerun the ICS wizard again.Mr. M.
