Antec Sonata Tower.

I made this computer and did not expereince any problems installing a fan.

However, the original case I used left a bit to be desired, so I got for my birthday an Antec Sonata case.

This has a preinstalled fan 120mm. This fan has two wires (1 black:1 red). joined to these wires are two connectors and they are joined together by 4 wires (2black: 1 red: 1 yellow) One of the connectors is female and the other male. They both have 4 connections (female end had 4 sockets: Male has 4 pins. ) Can anyone help me to sort out what these are for.

I have treid to send a picture of the connectors, but am not sure how to do this.

Once I start changing towers,I will not be able to ask for help,so am trying to see if I can do it, before I begin.

There isn't anyone out there who could talk me through,if I get in trouble??

PS I did manage the picture though.

Thank you very much for you reply. I can connect the male 4 pinned connector to the powere supply, but what do I do with the other end.(the female). There are also two connecters from the power supply, these have only 2 wires (one black;one red) and only 2 of the 4 pins occupied. Do I use these.,do you think. It just seems a jumble of wires. How I managed this on that I am using,I do not know. I was a year younger, but no wiser than I know of!!. J

As Redhat says, the spare can be left unconnected. You can, if you wish connect another fan on the side of the hard drive housing. There should be some rubber grommets to allow you to do this and avoid using screws. This is to prevent vibration and transmission of noise.

I've started using Sonata cases regularly and find them excellent. I think I have put about 15 - 16 computers together inside these cases now.

Note that if you're using the included power supply, there is a cable from there specifically for the fan(s). This gives you electronic speed control depending on the temperature detected by the sensors in the PSU. It is marked FAN ONLY.

Note also if you use another fan, ensure it blows INTO the case (the rear fan blows out).

Thank you Pops for your help. I cannot understand why the other end of the connector from the installed fan had a female as well as a male connector. Why would you use this and how could you use it as all the connectors from the power supply are female. Do I connect the male connector, which has 4 wires to the connector comming from the PSU which has only a and says "Fan" only. ? I do not intend to install a second fan. There isa blue and black cable from the PSU that says "Fan Moniter connector" Is this the one you are referring to and do I connect this the the socket and the MoBo? Thanks.J

The tiny blue & black cable/plug fan monitor attaches to the Chassis fan connector on the motherboard. The fan speed is then controlled by by PSU via signals it receives from the motherboard/PSU sensor(s).

If you don't intend installing a second fan you can just remove the extra cable connector if you wish but, I suggest you leave it in there, just don't connect it. You may find that one day you will need an extra fan - like now for example when the weather is extra hot.

Thanks again Pops for your help.

I am sorry to be so insistent, but I cannot understand what the second connector is for.(The female) If it is for a second fan then how could you connect it? all the connecters from the pSU are female. (Have sockets, not pins.)Also why does the connector from the PSU labeled "For Fan", have only 2 sockets whereas the connector on the fan has 4.pins. The fan ,as you know is preinstalled, not something that can be used for various scenerios.so I would think that if the fan connecter has 4 pins then the end coming from the PSU would have 4 sockets but it does not appear so. It says in the manuel " Connect a 4-pin connector from the PSU to the connector on the fan"

I am confused. Do not know if you can offer me any more help. Thanks. J

The normal wiring of a molex connector has 5V and 12V available. The chassis fan operates on a controlled voltage with a max of 12V. The control is done via the sensors on the M/B and PSU. It is important that this connector therefore is not used for anything else. The link connectors you are meaning are standard issue fully wired connectors in case, I believe, more fans are needed. It is unlikely that this would be necessary and the best thing to do is ignore them.

I hope you like your case. They are some of the best ones I have used - stylish yet functional with few useless gimmicks. The useless gimmick can be turned of if you want as well.

Best thing about them, though, is that they are quiet. I use the supplied PSU, a Zalman heatsink and I've line them with acoustic foam (you can get a kit specifically for this case, all cut to size) and the machines just quietly purr away in almost silence.

Thank you POPS for your comments. The case looks lovely and hopefully it will be quiet.

I must say that I am a bit reluctant to start the project of transferring everything from this computer. When I built this one,I had one I could use,but I gave that one away. So once I start,I am on my own. I do not see why I cannot do it again, but the task seems daunting. I guess I am a chicken!. I presume that the useless gimmick I would not use (the blue light) is connected via the white molex connector coming from the front of the case,is that correct? (there again,I do not understand why there are 2 connectors -one with 4 sockets and one with 4 pins.I think you have explained this to me,but I still do not undestand. Thank you for all your help. J

Yep, the blue light is connected via the Molex coming from the front.

Something I ought to bring to your attention is the removable filter at the front of case. Make sure you keep this clean and free from dust and stuff. We have a dog here and it's amazing how much hair and stuff gets trapped on the filter.

Thanks for that POPS I will remember to do the filter periodically. We have TWO dogs here and they are both "Hairy monsters" It is because of the dogs that I do not want te blue lights, in case it effects their eyes. (Am I being silly)I will let you know how I get on if you wish. Thanks again.J
