Clam Posted July 2, 2004 Report Share Posted July 2, 2004 Hi folks,I have a dual boot system with WinME on C: partition and XP Home on Q:, both on the same physical drive.I would like to remove ME and have XP on C: and retain all my internet, network setting &c. All my applications and data are in separate partitions with just a few odds & ends in 'Program Files' on Q:.Can anyone suggest how to proceed.Regards. Format everything and use fdisk to re-create 1 partition for your XP OS.2. use Fips (comes with windows???) though I hear it's hard to use and I have never done it before.3. Purchase Partition Magic. Formay everything or just C: ?Well, here's what I suggest (from what information you gave)Back up your data, and format the WINME partition (this can be done from inside windows XP. Just right click the drive and click format.)You will now have your regular windows xp partition alone, but you will have a blank partition. The only thing about doing it this way, is you can't resize your partitions. Just format them.2. What is Fips? I've just run a search in XP and found nothing.Fips (which I thought was a part of windows, sorry it isn't) can be found here.One thing I recomend before using this is, reading the documentation. First, it will help you understand what it is, and what it does. Second, I won't have to read it, and tell you what to do :D There are many links on the site for FAQ and documentation.I believe what it does is splits your drive, so merging it may not be possible.I recomend buying Partition Magic, it is not too expensive, and it can handle a wide number of tasks like this. After reading the info files on Fips I decided on the Partition Magic route, to resize the C partition. Had a few problems installing XP. It couldn’t find a dozen or so files in i386 on the CD and in consequence froze when it reached the ‘loading windows…….’ screen. I re-ran the installation in repair mode and that sorted it. It was then a 70 odd gigs worth of windows updates (the broadband has paid for itself this month).I had a good spring clean and got rid of a load of rubbish, then used PM to convert everything to NTFS.
