107606 Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 I recently reinstalled windows due to a IE problem (see other threads). I then installed Forefox to try to connect to the internet without using IE.So I called ntl to try to set up my PC broadband connection again. The cahp advised me to reinstall my modem drivers, so we popped the CD in and asked to install the drivers.It then told me to insert the Win 98 cd as some files (cannot remeber what they were called - setup maybe!!??) were missing. The ntl chappy didnt know what to type in there to extract the necessary files, so it was abandoned. Any ideas there, or should I reformat and start over? The reinstall clearly has bits missing... nellie2 Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 It is strange that IE is still knackered on a fresh install. did you reformat your hard drive?When windows asks for the 98 disk it doesn't look inside the folders... so 9 times out of 10 you need to use the wizard to browse the folders on the 98 disk. I never know what is in what folder so it can take some time clicking in and out of the folders, but the o/s is clever enough to know what it is looking for and when you point it to the folder and it finds what it wants in there then it will install. It gave me a box to type in where i wanted the files to be taken from , but I dont know where, and I dont know exactly what files it wants (it just said that setup thingymabob!). moon Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 You should reformat for best results, but before you do , follows nell's post. Point the wizard to your inserted CD and browse to the System 32 folder and click on that. The wizard might find your modem drivers in there. If not , identify your modem and find the 98 drivers for it online. Download those and then point the wizard to them. They might even fit on a floppy from another machine and then you could point your wizard to that.Edit; Whether or not any required drivers are on the 98 CD depends on if the hardware is 'supported' by Microsoft. moon Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 OK, I've sussed it. You can make a startup disc from your 98 CD. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel and click on Add/Remove programmes. At the top right you'll see a 'Create Startup Disc' tab. moon Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 Moving ahead , hopefully, you stick your startup disc in and fire up the PC. Assuming that its BIOS is already set to boot from floppy disc as first option you'll be offered a menu at some point so select ' CD ROM Support' The startup disc sequence will finish with an 'A' prompt. moon Posted September 19, 2004 Report Share Posted September 19, 2004 I don't know of any CD Rom drive that wont run from Windows generic drivers ( on the CD) although some may have functions which require the manufacturers software, but that can be downloaded after you're up and running.
