I get so fed up trying to get the updates that I just periodically download the whole shebang in the hope that they're included.

Incidentally, boris, I went to your download link , CNET downloads.com in Opera. It said. 'This site has attempted to install exploitative cookies. These have been refused' What does it say in Internet Exploiter ? :D

Display warning of illegal domains

This causes Opera to display cookies that contain illegal domain settings such as top-level domains (com, net, or org, for example). Opera does not permit these cookies to be accepted; the warning box is purely to inform you that a site has attempted to plant an illegal cookie that could be used to track your movements across the Net.

From where I stand, a tracking cookie is spyware. No big deal, I've blocked them.

I have split this thread. Sorry Moon, hope you understand.

What's to understand ? You're being tracked, I ain't. :D

If you would like to know more about Cookies, please read this:

2.4 Are Cookies Dangerous to My Computer?

NO. A cookie is a simple piece of text. It is not a program, or a plug-in. It cannot be used as a virus, and it cannot access your hard drive. Your browser (not a programmer) can save cookie values to your hard disk if it needs to, but that is the limit of the effect on your system.

Nice one. As not all browsers have a cookie-blocking facility I'd also suggest that the Windows Cookies folder gets flushed out from time to time, particularly if your browser is Internet Exploiter. ;)

Karen's Cookie Viewer, freeware, is also useful if you want to see who put 'em there, how long for, why, and also fry the little beggers.

A final word from me on the topic for those that think I'm daft, paranoid or both. I think that the internet experience should be safe and private and I'm not content to accept tracking cookies as a way of life. They're part of the illness of greed and , perhaps worse, malevolence. There's a war online and I'm with the freedom fighters.

The Pit is a bastion of propriety and here's a good article by its boss, Rob Cheng, who took on Gator at the risk of having his jocks sued off. In the spirit of it, there is absolutely no need to suffer tracking cookies if you don't want to.

IE has an option not to allow cookies, but quite a few websites require them.

It is good that you take extra precautions moon, and I am sorry if you feel I am arguing against you. I do realize the security issues with cookies, but they aren't all that bad.

In any case, it is a good idea to clean them out once in a while, just in case a few bad ones do show up. And yes, they do save things like usernames and passwords, but again it's part of our 'lazy' way of life.

Another point that applies here, that I used in you JPEG exploit post;

"if you can see it, it's already in your computer."

I don't feel we're arguing, crowman, I'm just pointing out , to those who give a damn, that Opera will allow you to select cookies before they're on your machine and that you can set it to refuse tracking cookies. Even eBay tries to set trackers. I agree with you, the cookie issue is solved in all browsers if you clean out your cookie folder. :) ( Even the advertising.com cookie I just got offered )
